Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has no cure; however there are treatments used to help control the symptoms such as psychological therapy and Drug Therapy.
Drug Therapy
There are medicines available in the form of stimulant and non-stimulant medications. Stimulants are available in the form of pills, capsules, liquids or skin patches. Medications consists of varieties such as short-acting, long- acting or extended release. One of the many benefits that long-acting or extended release medications may have for children are it only has to be taken once a day which would prevent daily trips to the school nurse for additional dosage. It is the most commonly used medication for ADHD. It helps to increase activity in areas of the brain that play a role in controlling attention and behavior.
Dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine): The approved age for this medicine is three (3) years and older. This medicine plays a similar role as methylphenidate it stimulates the parts of the brain that are responsible for controlling behavior and attention.
