Benito Juarez strongly believed in people’s freedom for his own country of Mexico. Benito Juarez’s beliefs of people’s rights and revolting against the French, converted him to become the first elected president of Mexico during the 1800s. Juarez was offered to be prime minister by Maximilian, but he refused. The United States refused to recognize Maximilian, and opposed the French invasion as a violation of the Monroe Doctrine. The French were demanded to leave Mexico by the US President Andrew Johnson. French began retreating from Mexico in the 1866 because of the US opposition and threat from Prussia. The last of Maximilian’s forces were defeated and he was sentenced to death in 1867. On June 19, 1867 at Cerro de las Campanas in Queretaro, Maximilian was executed, and his body was taken back to Europe for burial. Benito Juarez was reelected as president in 1867 and 1871 by the people because of his efforts to get rid of foreign monarchs. On July 18, 1872 Juarez died by a heart attack in office while reading a newspaper. Later Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada would succeed as president of Mexico. Benito Juarez has been remembered as a reformer. Juarez was dedicated to democracy, wanted equal rights, was religious, and was regarded as defense of national sovereignty. His leadership in Mexico is known as La Reforma Del Norte (The Reform of the North). La Reforma is represented as the winnings of liberal forces against conservatives in Mexico.
