Writer, inventor, politician, many people know Benjamin Franklin as being one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts commonly known as Bay Colony on January 17, 1706. Benjamin was the youngest son of 17 children Josiah Franklin had with wives Anne Child and Abiah Floger. For Benjamin Franklin his childhood consisted of a few years of basic education, while also working with his father in his candle business. Josiah intended on Benjamin to enter into the ministry, however he could only afford one year of schooling. As Benjamin started to age his vision started to weaken, he noticed himself becoming both near side and far sided. Franklin soon decided that he was going to construct an invention that would help him see long term. Growing up Benjamin had two pair of glasses, glasses for reading and glasses for seeing long distance. In 1784 Benjamin had a plan that he would consult with his optician to improve his vision. His plan was to slice his two pair of glasses in half and combine them, he would put the reading lenses on the bottom and the long distance on top, which would create his bifocals. By Franklin inventing this particular version of bifocals people would avoid the hassle of switching glasses when reading or walking.
