In the story of Beowulf the details of a heroic super-hero is portrayed. The Danish people suffered for twelve years but soon it was over. After many years of suffering Beowulf came to save the people. Beowulf came and faced many battles to prove he was the one that would help the people of Denmark. Beowulf went through three special battles, the battle with Grendel, Grendel’s Mother and the Dragon. All which were very important but the most important battle was the battle with the Dragon. The battle with set the stage for Beowulf’s strength.…
Throughout the epic, Beowulf demonstrated his strength as a warrior and a leader. When Grendel arrived at Herot, the other warriors “could not scratch at his skin, for that sin-stained demon had bewitched all men's weapons, laid spells that blunted every mortal man's blade.”(92-94). Beowulf took charge and used his own hands to fight and eventually defeat Grendel since his fellow men could not do so. This conveys how Beowulf was not only physically strong in battle, but how he took charge to defeat Grendel since the others were unable to. Beowulf also took it upon himself to battle Grendel's mother, which was where he utilized “the best of all weapons / But so massive that no ordinary man could lift / Its carved and decorated length. He drew it.”(244-246). Since a normal man would have been unable to life the sword, this event in the text displays how Beowulf is an epic hero. An epic hero is often characterized by possessing an immense amount of strength, which Beowulf had from being able to utilize the sword and defeat Grendel's mother. His strength as a warrior and a leader is what classifies Beowulf as a quintessential epic…
To sum it all up, In Beowulf, Beowulf is an archetypal hero who ended up being corrupted by the fame and fortune that was gained while doing the Danes a favour and killing their monsters. In Grendel, Grendel was labeled as a monster who tried to be part of a human society; the failure to be accepted as part of the society has forced Grendel to act like how he was labeled.…
It is said that Zeus, the Lord of the Sky, once stated that a true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength but by the strength of his heart. A person who claims to be a hero can boast about his strength and how many monsters he’s defeated, but he can’t be a true hero if in the end he’s defeating all these monsters to show off. A true and epic hero is the man or woman who has the intent on helping people in spite of overwhelming obstacles. Beowulf, because of his selflessness, valor, and honor, is the epitome of an epic hero.…
According to Emerson's essay he considers Beowulf a hero because he fits all the qualities of the heroes. A hero has to be respected by others Beowulf was respected, when he was fighting Grendel, the Danes wanted to help him; "Many a noble of Beowulf brandished his battle sword old would guard the live of his lord and protector." They are applying that he is very high and mighty. Emerson also says a hero has to have a war-like attitude. Beowulf portrays this when it describes him. “The stout-hearted warrior snatched as he slumbered, seizing hand with-grip”. Emerson also said that a hero has to have fortitude. One sees that he has fortitude when it says; “The foe i must grapple, fight for my life then foeman with foeman.” Emerson said a hero…

The great actor, Robert Downey Jr., once said, “I think that we all do heroic things, but hero is not a noun, it’s a verb. Based on a culture’s heroes, one can determine what the society’s values are. Beowulf represented the ultimate fighter of the Anglo-Saxon period, and what they considered to be the best characteristics for an individual to have (Allin 2016). He was the hero of lone combat against two horrifying monsters (Beowulf n.d.). He was incredibly valiant in his fights, as well as courageous (Beowulf n.d.). His story was told as an inspiration to young boys. They would want to be remembered as well as Beowulf was, and would be willing to do a great deal in order to ensure that they were successful warriors. The Anglo-Saxons were a Viking nation, always pillaging one nation or another…

One way it is seen that Beowulf was an epic hero was his more-than-human strength. For example, the story stated, “… hell’s captive caught in the arms / Of him who of all the men on earth / Was the strongest” (347-349). In this part of the story, Beowulf had caught Grendel in his supernatural grip after Grendel had attacked the Geats. This shows his epic hero trait of having more-than-human strength. Grendel, the evil giant, had no hope of escaping Beowulf’s supernatural hands. In addition, the author wrote, “… hanging high / From the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster’s / Arm, claw and shoulder and all” (393-395). What is happening in this quote is that Beowulf had ripped off Grendel’s arm, ending the long, gruesome battle. Therefore, Beowulf’s epic hero trait of having supernatural strength can be seen from the way he ripped off Grendel’s impenetrable arm. Also, the story says, “…For hours he sank through the waves…” (423). In this part of the story Beowulf is going underwater to defeat Grendel’s mom. This quote shows Beowulf’s epic trait by stating that it took Beowulf hours to sink underwater. No normal human being can hold their breath for hours underwater like Beowulf could. Through all of these comparisons it is obvious that Beowulf is a great epic hero with supernatural strength.…
Beowulf thought he was brave, he was not shy to told his story to others. “Some years ago when we were young men, still in our youth, Breca and I made a boast a solemn vow, to venture our lives on the open sea.” (452-455). He loved to tell others about himself. He was proud of himself. Beowulf was a kind of epic hero. He was the strongest man in a lot people’s opinion. Text show out this“He was the strongest man alive.”(154). He is brave, strong, and does not afraid the monsters. All those make he like a epic hero. I think Beowulf is a brave, virtuous man. He was not a part of Dans, but he still come to help all the Bans’ citizens. When someone exhorted he to go back, but he did not. “We have sailed across the sea to seek…
There are five different traits that must be examined when deciding whether or not a character is an epic hero. The hero must be of noble birth or a high position, his actions often display courage and superhuman deeds, the setting is vast, the hero must be known nationally or internationally for his heroism, the hero must have humility, and the hero must face a supernatural foe (Characteristics of Epic Heroes) These characteristics match the poem of Beowulf and can be used to show that he is an epic hero. For example, In Sean Heaney’s, Beowulf: A New Verse Translation, it says that “So ought a kinsman act, instead of plotting and planning in secret…
