Beowulf As An Epic Hero
Beowulf is such a unique and distinctive character. He shows people the true definition of an epic hero. He is the type of hero that people would look up to. He is a confident leader for many, and that is what makes him who he is. Beowulf’s main characteristics are loyalty, bravery, and strength. The loyalty of Beowulf as a hero, is shown in many different ways. Beowulf helps others, even when it doesn’t involve him. Beowulf is the type of hero that will go out of his way to help someone in need. That, to me, is a very loyal thing to do. Even toward the end of his life, Beowulf said “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again.” (Lines 624-626) This passage is proof of Beowulf’s loyalty. …show more content…
He went and threw himself toward Grendel! He fought Grendel with his bare hands! “Prince of the Geats had killed Grendel, ended the grief, the sorrow, the suffering” (lines 404-405). This passage shows bravery let off by Beowulf. Even as Beowulf is nearing death, he fights off a dragon to show his bravery and protect his people. Power is shown by fighting Grendel, the dragon, and all of the other creatures that he fought. “My duty was to go to the Danes’ great king. They have seen my strength for themselves.” (Lines 245-246). It’s as if Beowulf really wanted everyone to know his strength and know what he is made of. Beowulf’s people already knew he was a great leader, and a very powerful hero, but he wanted to show other people what he was made of. Beowulf really worked to become a legend, and it seems like that’s what he did. He really made sure he was well known. Through Beowulf’s whole life, he definitely showed that he was a hero. He lived up to all the expectations that were thrown out there. He showed everyone from all over, his bravery, loyalty, and his strength. The one thing that made Beowulf great is that he always had confidence. He left his thrown to Wiglaf who would carry on, just the same way as Beowulf

Beowulf was significantly glorified all through the book; even when he died his men mourned his loss, built him a tower, and buried the entirety of his treasures underneath it. The Geats and the Danes knew a hero of Beowulf’s status would never again come to pass. Beowulf had amazing leadership; he would never lead anyone where he would not go, and his men glorified him of that. He had superior strength, intelligence and courage. Beowulf’s strength could not be contested, as he was able to kill Grendel bare handed and rip a sword off a wall that only giants used. Under no conditions could an ordinary man achieve such a feat. Beowulf could swim for hours and fight monsters in the raging sea. Even at old age, Beowulf took on the battle of slaying the dragon. Beowulf was undeniably a strong and responsible leader. He prepared for the future of his warriors when he reached his eventual demise. His men, mourning his loss, wept, knowing a man of Beowulf’s strength and leadership would never come again.…

At the time of the battle with the Dragon, Beowulf was old in age. His strength would be tested because he had not fought in over 50 years. Going into this special battle Beowulf knew what he was up against, “I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me” (lines 626-628) By this it showed that Beowulf honor never left him and would always show. This battle stuck out. Like most battles, Beowulf fought with his famous sword and shield, but it soon ended when the dragon broke the sword and burned the shield with its hot flames. At this moment the battle began a dramatic shift because Beowulf was left with his hands. With the battle with Grendel and Grendel’s mother Beowulf could use his hands easily but yet this…

The second reason why I think Beowulf establish himself as a hero is when he fights grendel’s mother. He goes down in her cave and tries to hit her with his sword but it fails to pierce her skin. That’s a good example that he is a hero because knowing that the sword didn’t pierce her skin he throws the sword away and attacks her with his bare hands. Than he sees a sword of enormous size which he immediately grabs. He use sword to kill Grendel’s mother by cutting her head off.
