The poem and movie of Beowulf are both good in their each respected format. The poem of Beowulf is a great read about a true hero, and it helps one learn to read Old English. The movie of Beowulf is a decent action movie about a brave and courageous hero, and has an interesting visual form. The movie for Beowulf was originally suppose to launch in 1997, but the funding and intrest fell through. In 2005 the idea of a Beowulf movie was revisited due to the fact visual technology had gotten more advanced. The movie's script
had to be altered before the movie got green-lighted, because the new director did not like the original script which was heavily based off the poem.
The movie of Beowulf does a fair enough job of retelling the poem, and adding, in normal Hollywood fashion, something extra to the original story, but there are some major differences in the poem and movie. In the poem Beowulf attacks Grendel’s Mother down in a lake and commences fighting her in armor and with the sword he received from Unferth. During the fight Beowulf’s sword breaks, and Grendel's Mother tries to stab him, but Beowulf’s armor protects him from it. He then finds a giant's sword, and uses said sword to stab into the hideous creature’s neck and kill her. Also she may resemble this or this. In the movie he tracks Grendel’s Mother without any sort of armor. He finally finds her, and instead of a hideous beast like in the poem, he finds a beautiful woman who just happens to look like this. Instead of killing her he does the exact opposite.
In the poem Beowulf returns to his native home land after vanquishing Grendel’s Mother and Grendel, and he ascends to the throne of his home by being a devout and studious subject to King Hygelac till he and his son pass away. In the movie, Beowulf comes back to Heorot and claims to have eradicated Grendal’s Mother. After feasting and drinking in the hall King Hrothgar talks to Beowulf about Grendel’s Mother and finds out the truth. After the talk the king tells his court Beowulf shall be the ruler of his kingdom, and the king then commits suicide by falling off a cliff.
