Beowulf's Downfall Essay

Remember that boy you met the other day at the super market. He is not just some boy, that was your future husband that you just saw. That first meeting will be what causes a snowball effect until both of you are spending the rest of your lives together. Fate comes in many forms, from the meeting of a future spouse, friend, or the results of a battle. Even if the result is not what you wanted, fate will drive the rest of your life, just like it did for Beowulf. Since the start, Beowulf’s fate had many good things coming his way, but also fate also lead him to his demise. In the opening battle with Grendel, fate has a hand in the ending. Just as when life gives you a monster you slay it. Just like how Beowulf slayed Grendel’s mom Beowulf also began a battle with the fire breathing dragon. On lines 620-626 Beowulf is preparing for battle, and tells of the glory and fame that he is gotten over his life time. Beowulf knows that the battle may take his life but he chooses to let fate decide. By granting the result of the battle to fate, Beowulf is allowing his life to be in the hands of something that he cannot change. This proves to be deadly for Beowulf. In the end, fate conquered while Beowulf lost his battle causing the loss of his life. Overall, fate lead Beowulf on a crazy chase from slaying monsters to fighting a fire breathing dragon. We can all fight and say that it was Beowulf choices that caused the ending, but like all Anglo Saxon believed they let fate decide the rest. Fate is not only something that happens to us every day, but it is something that allowed Beowulf to win a lot of battles. Fate may have chosen the ending to this story for Beowulf, but it did not change all the other events that happened.
