Best Bums, a Controversial Competition
Cambridge University students have bared all and once again caused a stir on campus. Students from Cambridge have opened the finals for their controversial ‘best bums’ competition.

Twelve students, six male and six female have continued the bum craze that Kim Kardashian has recently sparked by opening voting for the final of the competition formally know as ‘Rear of the Year’.

The students bare their rears in scenic photos on the campus grounds and around Cambridge city.

The pictures are accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek moment where they play into their well-known smarts. One naked undergraduate student dressed as Kim Kardashian did in her most recent shoot ‘breaking the internet’. He wears black gloves and pearls and his picture is quoted “Kim thinks what her publicist tells her to think.”

Each student has their name and field of study above their picture, along with their humorous comment below, giving an insight into the intelligent mind of a Cambridge University student.

Mark from Pembroke reading Zoology stands in a field in front of a very confused bull. His picture is quoted: “Marc believes that the evolution of the carbon concentrating mechanism in eukaryotic algae coincided with the evolution of the land plants and the resultant drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration.”

The competition has sparked controversy in the past, from feminist groups and societies. Amelia Horgan, woman’s officer at Cambridge University students union says: “

At the moment Katie from Sidney Sussex reading English, who stands on the roof of her college dressed only in blue stockings is leading the competition with 47 per cent of the vote.

I was appointed as a women rights Ambassador for UN Women four months ago. And, the more I spoke about feminism, the more I realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.…

“Feminist criticism derives from a critique of a history of oppression, in this case the history of women’s inequality” (Mays 2347). Women have always been second to men in mostly everything they are competing in. Even if the man and woman have the exact same job, the man is probably making more money just because he is a man. Women barely got the chance to vote less than fifty years ago! Women still have a long way to go to catch up where the men are, because men have always had a say in how to do things, and the woman would just agree about what he had said. Feminist are here to change all of that though. With protests showing women are equally compatible to do the same thing as men can do. “One of the first disciplines…

Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how this use of photoshopping is negatively affecting young women. Whereas some are convinced that girls put the pressure on themselves, others maintain that the media is to be held responsible for exerting pressure to have the “perfect body.” It is sometimes said that Kim Kardashian, a well-known celebrity, is a role model for these young women and girls. Recently, Kim Kardashian posted a naked selfie, edited using Instagram, claiming that this act was self-empowering. Kardashian herself writes for her online blog, "I am empowered by my body . . . I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world” (qtd. in Filipovic). Basically, what Kardashian was trying to say here is that girls and women should love their body no matter what they look like. Kardashian and other celebrities like her are speaking out for body image and are trying to help girls realize they don't have to have a flawless body; however, these flawless bodies, like Kardashian’s, are the types of bodies that are seen in advertisements for the fashion…

For any number of reasons, parody, jokes, and satire-whether in print or otherwise—tend to rankle students and university administrators alike as few other forms of expression do. A lot has changed in the last 100 years. Women have taken each step towards equality that they have been allowed. “Looking back over the century, Nancy Woloch stated, "Women of the twenty-first century, thus inherited an unfinished agenda, one initiated by second wave feminists in the 1960’s and 1970’s but incomplete as the century ended”, (Bowles, 2011).…
