The best experience of my life
The day was August 21 2002 and it had finally come, I waited to what seem to have been thousands of years, but it was true it was finally here. In the crisp cool morning as I open my eyes at 5am I rushed to wake my mother rushing her to the car, driving as fast as I could the morning had finally came when I take my driver’s test. I couldn’t be more anxious, and I couldn’t wait any longer. So there I was third person in line bouncing as if I had to use the restroom, but my turn finally came as the instructor walked over to me with a grin on her face like she hated her job, she looks up at me and says “Are you ready to take your test?” YES I replied, I was then instructed to get in the car and prepare the vehicle for operation.
I could not be more focused and more nervous holding the steering wheel so tight imbedding my fingers into the leather, making sure not to make any mistakes so focused making every turn perfect. We then pull back into the DMV she instructed me to pull into an open parking spot and shut off the car, it was then she turned her head so slowly and looks directly into my eyes with such satisfaction and says “you’re a really good driver but you should really slow down and make sure you take every safely step before driving because not wearing our seat belt is an automatic failure”. This has been the best experience in my life because it’s a prime example of being so tunnel vision you forget simple little things in life that can have such a big impact in my life, and every time I rush something I always remind myself of this situation that set me back months of not being able to drive

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

My white knuckles clutched the wheel as my little car whined and jerked into high gear, finally accelerating onto Six Forks. Barely a mile from home, and driving was already intimidating. My credentials were impeccable. I had passed a dreadful thirty hour class with a teacher whose voice carried to the moon and proven my driving prowess to a cartoonish instructor sporting a beret, plaid shirt, corduroy jacket, billowy pants, and a pair of suspenders. A pair of rimless spectacles made his eyes appear small and beady while accentuating his pudgy face. There was no conceivable reason to be nervous, but I could not shake the grim sense of foreboding that hovered over me.…

Today is perhaps one of the most important days of my life. It is the day I take my placement exam that determines which major you will be put into at the higher learning institution. Shakily I finish getting dressed for the day, I am adorned in a pair of navy pants and a grey button up with the number 84 on the cuff. Each year the society gives a number to every child born. I was the 84th child of the year so that is the number I was assigned, many of my other classmates have number ranging from 20 to over 200. I slip out of my room and jog to the end of my hall barely catching the last lift to the 97th floor where the test is administered. Not everyone gets invited to secondary school, for 75% of the world primary is the end, they didn’t pass, and would be taught trade jobs with little opportunity for advancement. Due to this pressure of the test looms over me and the memory of leaving my mother and family take over my mind almost daily.…

I was sat squished in the back of one of the minivans with Sam, our treats and various forms of entertainment for the long ride sat between us. The drive was long and boring. We slept, played every car ride game possible and watched movies. The 806.2 miles seemed to take everlasting. We stopped for two nights at a hotel and took a day to go to an amusement park. My love for amusement parks was stronger than my urge to return home and after spending the day on roller coaster rides and eating cotton candy, I decided for a brief moment that maybe this trip wouldn't be so bad after…

As we found the place I saw that the instructors were about to leave. I got out of the car and one of the instructors ask me if I was here to take my driving test and I said yes. The instructor looked kind of mad and told me that they usually don’t wait more than 3 minutes for people and that I was lucky she didn’t leave. My mom, dad, and my brother got out of the car and the instructor told me to get in the car. I was pretty nervous and I remember my dad saying “breath and don’t worried you would do fine”. As I got in the car with the instructor I obviously had to fix the seat because you know I’m kind of short and couldn’t reach the accelerator. The instructor…

Penny, my driving instructor, was sitting beside me reminding me to breathe and that I was doing great. As I turned onto the next road, I was relieved to realize we were headed back to Augusta and that we were almost done. I began to settle in while going at a comfortable speed of 50 mph down a straight smooth road. Soon, we entered the hustle and bustle of town and once again the tenseness and panic crept in. I was stopped at the traffic light just before the uneven, dirt driveway of “The Driving School.” The light turned green and I rolled up to the entrance of the driveway with my left blinker on, but a man with a baby stroller was slowly making his way across the parking lot.…

There was much to learn but I was getting a hang of it. Coming to a stop sign shortly down the road I had been in 4th gear and he said to me “Neutral is your friend in these instances so pull it out of gear.” As I pull it out of gear I find neutral and remember praying that it wasn’t an uphill battle once again. To my advantage, it was a downward facing corner so with slim confidence and nerves tingling I began to drive… stalling once again, and again, etc. Once I finally get a hang of it I decide that I’m very enticed to the difficulty and enjoy the learning of the car and the new skills I’ve…

This was a fantastic day. The night before was thinking, “Wow, it’s actually happening. Tomorrow”. Then I woke up the next morning. On a friday! How much better could that have been. There was a football game later, classes went super quick, there was an assembly I was excited for as well. So the classes were short because of the assembly. I ended up getting picked up early. Right after 6th period. When i was headed to the gym. I got called down to the office. My mom got me and then we went straight to the DOL. It took a few minutes, I’d say around 30 minutes because they needed my waver from my drive instructor in drivers ed in to be able to give me my permit. I wasn’t able to get a picture on my permit because my mom didn’t get my actual birth certificate. But then the lady said to get behind the desk and sign everything. Then she printed it out and she handed it to me and we walked out with it and my mom handed me the keys. I got in the car and she did the mom thing and took a bunch of pictures. But in that moment I felt that feeling of growing up. I felt so trusted and I thought about all these huge privileges I had just earned.…

We were finally ready to leave and began walking to the car, which during the walk I remembered I needed to stop and get gas. So we headed to the gas station, filled up CoCo, which was my first vehicle, and were off to the dinner. In order to get to the dinner we had to get on the I-10 to I-110. We started off at great start on the highway. Crazily, only ten minutes into the ride we faced complications. While driving in the middle lane on I-10, an eighteen wheeler truck felt the need that it had to get over from the left lane into the middle. With the position I was in I could neither get over to my right nor to my left due to other vehicles being there. There was also a vehicle behind me. The truck began veering over to the right into my lane. I began to honk my horn and slow down as much as possible without causing the car behind me to hit me. I assumed the truck would realize by my honking of the horn it just was not the best time for him to come over into the lane I was in. Unfortunately he did not, and by the time the vehicle behind had gotten over for me to slow down even more the back of the truck hit the front of my car. The truck was lower than usual and the back hit the hood of my car sending my car spinning three times thereafter smacking into the barrier on the bridge. Initially, I was frozen in my seat thinking how fast it escalated but how slow it felt as far as spinning and hitting the…

I thought long and hard on the things I did not do correctly and I improved my driving habits. I walk in again, but this time not as confident as the last. Maybe my confidence was over-kill? Who knows. I hop back in the car with an instructor for the second time and already, I know it’s different. The tension isn’t existent, the vibes are positive, my mind is clear. I’m giving myself my own little pep talk. I used a blinker for every turn I made, no matter how redundant it felt. I knew where every control center was in my vehicle, even if I felt I would never use it. I impressed my instructor with my parallel parking whipping skills. But most importantly, I was cool, confidant, and… ready. It took me the first failure to realize what I needed to improve on. And honestly, I don’t even consider the first time to be a fail. Had I actually got my license that day, that would have been the ultimate failure! I came out on top because I am a better, safer and more improved driver today, than I was the first time I walked into that office, not even being sixteen for twenty-four hours. Looking back now, I realize that failure was, in fact, what sculpted me for my…

The test was today! Why did I waste an entire day playing that dumb game? I thought, feeling upset. Forgetting you had a test the next day was awful, but realizing you never studied, and it's all of your fault, made me feel paralyzed. Spending an entire day glued to my phone? This wasn't like me! I felt guilty and nervous throughout my whole body because I knew today wasn’t going to end well. With dark circles under my eyes from staying up all night on my phone, I tried not to feel exhaustion that was consuming me, hoping for the best as I left for school during that bright early morning. On the bus, I tried to cram as many facts as I could in my brain, but nothing was familiar; I knew nothing. The only thing I knew on the test was how to write my name, and the grade I was going to receive on it: a failing one. When I got to school after a terrible bus ride, any trace of false hope disappeared from my mind, and as I walked into my class, I had already felt defeated. After taking my test, I didn’t want to think about it a second more than I had to, I just wanted to relax by playing Candy Crush on my…

The wind raged towards my hair, wooshing it back and forth as it tickled my ears. The sun’s rays kissed my black shades, making my eyes burn with jealousy. The waves were bleeding white blood as the speed boat kept accelerating. The day seemed nice at first, but it then turned to a hilarious tragedy between two lovers. Nothing can separate them both, no matter what. I don’t think that this experience will encounter anybody’s fate, but I was surprised that it encoutered mine.…
