The Big Data Challenges Lamin A Tunkara CIS 500 – Information Systems for Decision Making Dr. Edwin OTTO July 16, 2013

Abstract
The paper explores the challenges of big data and the strategies deployed by Volvo Car Corporation in instituting an information technology infrastructural tool that helped the company tap into its massive data, bank to extract information for meaningful process improvements. The paper culled information from Dumbill (2012) who in an article entitled “What is big data” reiterates the importance of digging into big data to extract information that will likely help a company realize a competitive difference and increased advantage over competition. The paper examines how Volvo Car Corporation had applied this business ideology hence able to ensure good and safe products and ultimately their drive to a superior customer service and experience. The paper highlights the significance of big data concepts as alluded to by cyniqua (2012) in a case study on how Volvo edged its way into becoming a stronger and a better competitor by analyzing its data to make projections on future products. The paper also reviewed the challenges of big data as laid out by Manyika et al. (2011) in the form of security threats and the shortage of experts in big data use and management. Keywords: Big Data, competitive advantage, security The Big Data Challenges: How Volvo Car Corporation edged Competition by going Cloud A voluminous and incredible amount of data is produced daily from individuals, businesses, governments across the world of information gathering and sharing. A text message, an email message loaded with images and videos, monthly sales report at a department store, information obtained from a recipient of a government sponsored program, tons and tons of sources are ways in which data is acquired. But when data collected inundates any given system, the frustration upon users becomes a nightmare. The

    Volvo split from Ford in in 2010. In doing so they needed to create their own standalone IT environment and at the same time improve its business intelligence capabilities and operational efficiency (Microsoft, 2012). In a world where many consumers value smart technology in coexistence with automotive engineering, Volvo has created vehicles with hundreds of sensors and CPU’s embedded throughout the car (I-CIO, 2011). “Besides vehicle data gathered by sensors in and on the vehicle, we also collect visual information from four cameras. This gives us a good view of what happened in the cab and on the road at any given point in time” (Volvo Group, 2011). From the central locking system to the on board camera’s, data is being captured for use within the vehicle and then transmitted via the cloud back to Volvo (I-CIO, 2011). Once data is received at Volvo it is streamed to a centralized analysis hub (the Volvo Data Warehouse), alongside data from customer relationship management systems (CRM), dealership systems, and product development and design systems (I-CIO, 2011). Once data is retrieved at the Volvo Data Warehouse it is archived where it can be retrieved and analyze or manipulated by Volvo employees. Through the cloud Volvo is massing large amount of rich data and this is providing them with the opportunity to “turn that resource into something that no only helps build better cars, but also helps the customer have a better experience [through their interaction and above all safety]” (I-CIO, 2011).…

After years and years of accumulating it and thinking they needed better transaction data, a lot of organizations are finally at the point where they say, "OK, we don't have any excuses left. We need to start managing our business differently on the basis of our data." The second takeaway is that you can successfully compete on analytics.
