Abstract
The paper explores the challenges of big data and the strategies deployed by Volvo Car Corporation in instituting an information technology infrastructural tool that helped the company tap into its massive data, bank to extract information for meaningful process improvements. The paper culled information from Dumbill (2012) who in an article entitled “What is big data” reiterates the importance of digging into big data to extract information that will likely help a company realize a competitive difference and increased advantage over competition. The paper examines how Volvo Car Corporation had applied this business ideology hence able to ensure good and safe products and ultimately their drive to a superior customer service and experience. The paper highlights the significance of big data concepts as alluded to by cyniqua (2012) in a case study on how Volvo edged its way into becoming a stronger and a better competitor by analyzing its data to make projections on future products. The paper also reviewed the challenges of big data as laid out by Manyika et al. (2011) in the form of security threats and the shortage of experts in big data use and management.
