Biggest Dork
I grew up in a family of massive nerds! My dad in particular never wasted an opportunity to geek out- and my obsessive childhood crush on Luke Skywalker and years spent doing math worksheets proved how much of an influence he had on me. In order to maintain his status as The World’s Biggest Dork (which I say with all the affection in the world), my dad needs a place to get all his geeky paraphernalia from- and his primary source for the ever-growing stream of miscellaneous nerdy objects has always been the internet. It is commonplace in my household for a package from Woot.com, or ThinkGeek, to arrive on our doorstep. And when he opened up the brown cardboard box of glory one day and handed something to me, I was so excited! I ripped off the protective layer of bubble wrap, and there it lay, in all its beauty and grace: The Origami-A-Day Calendar. The Origami calendar gave me a new design to tackle every day- and I relished it. It got to the point where my desire to fold Origami was borderline obsessive; I checked out …show more content…
This is where the markers come in- you can draw as much or as little as you want! However, I would like to remind you to be gentle when decorating and handling your box, as it is made out of paper. And you’re done! Doing origami like this is a fun and easy way for you to pass the time, and gain patience. There’s so much more I could say about origami, but for now I must conclude. Hopefully, you all know how to fold an Origami Blitz Box- and can fold almost any other design- by identifying your materials, folding your design, and customizing it. I’d like to wrap up my speech with a quote by Joseph Wu: “Creation out of nothing. I often say that origami is as close as you can get to that. It's a piece of paper. Beyond that, you don't need anything else.” Hopefully, today I taught you how to make something out of nothing, and you can utilize that skill whenever you so desire in the future. Thank you for your

The ancient art of origami gained popularity in Japan during the mid Edo period. Origami was first used to make simple ornaments that were given as greeting cards, wedding charms, and so on. During the 1900, origami grew to become an activity enjoyed by the world which pushed for new techniques to emerge such as, wet-folding and cutting into the origami sculptures. These technique were originally designed by the artists Akira Yoshizawa and Kosho Uchiyama. As today’s youth takes origami into their own hands it has become a fun new tool for animation, recreating popular images, and a way of showing…

I have been surrounded by technology even before I started school. Despite being immigrants, with limited money and a subsistence wage, my parents invested in that old computer, a Sony computer that ran Windows XP. About five years ago, our school received a number of outdated computers and a small grant to install Internet access from the nearby Armand Hammer Corporation. We converted a classroom downstairs into our first-ever computer laboratory, and the kids couldn't get enough. Very few of them had used a computer before, and of those, few actually owned one. Even today, a lot of kids know what a computer is but lack basic knowledge about its use. Six months ago, one of our outstanding students, Jake Meyers, told me that he wanted to make websites for a living. I was enamored, and decided to help him as best as I could.…

As a little girl, I had always been fascinated with technology. Whether it was pretending to “hack” into my dad’s laptop at 6 years old, or building remote control cars and running electrical circuits at age 8, my interest in technology was hugely inspired by my father. I wasn’t normal in the way you’d describe younger girls; by playing with dolls and makeup. Instead, I was the girl dirtied by the forest soil or fixated on taking apart anything electronic in the house. I went through a multitude of remote controls, pens, keyboards, and anything else that you could imagine having numerous pieces in it. I was enthralled by the way items were put together. And by combining pieces that seemed to be random metal and plastic, somehow you could make…

    Tortoise and Hare

Overall the Tortoise and the Hare project was a good example of how production works in the real world. The first round was an eye opener for a few teams in that a little more preparation needed to be done than was done. Students in the first round lost anywhere from $95 to $250. The main problem was quality control. The groups were more worried about the quantity of tortoises and hares rather than the quality of the folds. Also, the group that brought a paper cutter had the upper hand by far in the first round. The groups between round one and round two learned a lot, the numbers could speak for themselves. In round two the lowest profit made was $65 while the highest was $113. For the most part, in the second round less origami animals were made but more could actually be sold. The groups realized the mindset they needed to have was quality over quantity.…
