For this assignment, students will explore one topic related to social service work and/or social justice and will: complete a literature review, identify a research topic; formulate a purpose statement and a research question.

Before starting this assignment, please review pages 31-43 in the required textbook.

Literature Review:

Exploring the literature is a great way to help guide you towards your research idea! It is important to consult a variety of sources, such as existing theory, previous research, practical experiences, personal interest and current events. Reviewing literature is always helpful in generating a good research question. While reviewing literature it is important to identify common themes or gaps in the research (for example, ask yourself, which populations are not represented in the research). Returning to the literature after you have conducted your research is also an important step you will take in the research process (Bouma, Ling, & Wilkinson, 2012, p.32). Process:

To complete the literature review, identify a general area of focus for your research (completed week 2) and seek resources related to that topic to guide you towards your research question. Students will select five (5) academic publications (i.e. books, book chapters, journal articles, research reports, etc.) to complete their literature review. Do not use newspaper or magazine articles or material from Wikipedia, blogs, Facebook postings, tweets or similar sources for this assignment. Articles taken from the internet must be from credible sources and appropriately referenced (for example, CAMH). You are allowed a maximum of two references from the internet. You will lose marks for using any of the excluded sources. The literature review should be presented as a summary of the articles and will be approximately 2 pages.

Part 2: Summary of Social Work Speaks and “Unit 3” The section “Poverty and Economic Justice” in Social Work Speaks discusses the economy and its balance, or lack thereof, as well as the people who are impacted by the economy’s debilitating imbalance. The PowerPoint titled “Unit 3: Children and Poverty” helps to further understand the poverty crisis that our society is facing by focusing on the children who live in poverty. The social work profession is there to help those who are most vulnerable: children, single parents, older adults, and families that are financially oppressed. In modern social work the professionals help with not only economic policies but they also help create a safety net as well as support systems for those in need.…

A literature review is not an annotated bibliography in which you summarize briefly each article that you have reviewed. While a summary of what you have read is contained within the literature review, it goes well beyond merely summarizing professional literature. It focuses on a specific topic of interest to you and includes a critical analysis of the relationship among different works, and relating this research to your work. It may be written as a stand-alone paper or to provide a theoretical framework and rationale for a research study (such as a thesis or dissertation).…
