On November 13, 1993, Bill Clinton argues how Martin Luther King fought for the African-American community’s rights, but they are using it in the wrong way. Bill Clinton wanted all of the crime that was being committed to stop in the community of Memphis. Martin Luther King fought for their freedom, but not for the freedom to commit crime. Bill Clinton was trying to persuade the African-Americans to try and change the community for better, so the government’s changes can work for both the government and the community. For example, Bill Clinton implies, “We’re doing our best, but I do not believe we can repair the basic fabric of society until people who are willing to work have work.” He was showing how indignant …show more content…
he felt about the crimes that were occurring in the community that he was willing to help them make a difference.
In addition, Bill Clinton explained how Martin Luther King didn’t live and die to see the American family destroyed. He discussed how an eighteen year old was shot by a thirteen year old because of a stupid dare and how people were destroying their lives by the use of drugs or building fortunes by destroying the lives of others. He wanted the community to hear these few cases, so the African-Americans can maybe regret those things and try to put a stop to all the crimes once and for all. Bill Clinton compares the Scripture to the African-American community; “You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world,” that “if your light shines before men, they will give glory to the Father in Heaven.” Furthermore, he used this passage from the Bible to describe how they are like salt, you can disappear and dissolve without a trace, but all that will be left behind is the gravel. He means that the crimes they commit can come and go without anybody noticing, but some little residue will be left behind and because of that you wont have anything unique and wont be anybody’s role model. Bill Clinton was trying to persuade the African-American community to stop with all the crime, so the world can be a better place, but the only one that can make
that change is the community. “And I tell you it is our moral duty to turn this around,” he implies. He was pointing out how it is their job to make the change; no one else can fix the things they destroyed. They are the only ones that can fix the community, so the government’s changes can work for them.
