Respondents asked if they have committed deviant acts. Acts such as lying, fencing (buying or selling stolen things), hitting someone, etc. is hereby measured if such acts are a contributory factor towards animal abuse. Respondents are to answer 20-item questionnaire pertaining to deviant acts. Responses are: Never (0); Once (1); 2-3 times (2); 3-4 times (3); 5 times and above (4). Items include: Purposely damaged or destroyed property belonging to your parents or other family members. Purposely damaged or destroyed property belongs to the school. In table 2, we describe the dependent variable (i.e. animal abuse) and the independent variable (i.e. attitudes towards animals). Our attempts explain animal abuse commission using select demographic factors and social factors will show in table 3.
Descriptive statistics of key variables
Table 2 presents descriptive statistics results. A total of 116 (73%), participants indicated that they committed animal abuse and 43 (27%) indicated that they had not committed such acts. The total number of abuse that was applied by the participants was 94. Among these five major types of abuse reported are: 30% hit, beat, kicked 22% were stoned, 9% were shot (gun, bow and arrow), 9% were trapped and 7% were drowned The total number of animals that have been maltreated by the participants was 98. And they are the following: turtles, snakes, insects are 24%; cats are 20%; dogs are 17%, and Fish are 15%; birds are 11%. Rabbits, hamsters, mice, guinea pigs and gerbils are only 8%, and Horse is 3%. You would see this in Table 2.
