My grandmother used to tell me that I needed to be sure about motherhood before choosing to become a mother for two very important reasons. First, the mother is the child’s first teacher for everything in his/her life and secondly children learn what they live. If everyone stopped and thought about that before they created and brought innocent children into the world, we would not have the societal levels of violence we see everyday. You simply can not turn on a television and not see that someone has been raped, murdered, shot or otherwise had their life turned upside down. Take for example, in my southern upbringing it used to be and still is acceptable that if your child acts a “fool”, its okay to strongly discipline them in public and if anyone has anything to say about it, they can get some too. Nowadays, everyone wants to call Child Protective Services and then claim they do not understand why they are now appearing on the Dr. Phil show, because little Billie/Susie is an out of control and violent teen towards them, because they didn’t start the discipline in the home at an impressionable age and now tax payers have to foot the bill for it as little Billie/Susie goes off to prison. It takes a village to raise a child and while we do not have villages anymore, we do still have a society and a culture that is vehemently violent.
The United States now has more of its own people in the prison system than any other country on earth. (http://worldfreeinternet.net, 2007). How is putting a non-violent offender convicted of writing bad checks in a prison with violent, institutionalized offenders going to make them come out as anything other than more violent than when they went in? We have got to find acceptable ways of reducing violence in our society, instead of continually perpetuating the cycle. One way we can reduce violence in our society is to place as much emphasis on education as we do video games and
