Tioman Island

Biology Fieldwork Survey 2013
Date: 15th April – 19th April 2013 (Monday – Friday)
Site location: Tioman Island, Malaysia
Type of habitat surveyed:
Located 32km away from the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Tioman Island is a small island is surrounded by the South China Sea and has a sheer size of 20km long and 11km wide. Tioman Island bears constant humid conditions and hot temperatures due to its close proximity to the equator. The island consists of inhabited dense forests which total up to approximately 8 296 hectares and numerous coral reefs housing diverse marine life.
As a large group, we broke up into 4 sub-groups and conducted our individual coastal survey studies while following a pre-discussed plan of assessment. Our surveys involved the use of 50cm x 50cm quadrats with a 5x5 grid, measuring tape, thermometers, inclinometers and marking poles, and data loggers with pH and oxygen detecting electrodes. Our method involved the following:
1. Quadrats
a. Local frequency
a.i. This involved individually counting the abundance of sea cucumber and macro algae (Padina) besides turf algae within the boundaries of the quadrat.
a.ii. This also allowed us to assess the general distribution of particular species along the transect.
b. Percentage cover
b.i. The abundance of turf algae was measure using this method. This survey was conducted within the individual segments of the 25-square quadrat. It was instructed that if the species had occupied about 50% or more of a segment, it would count as the total coverage of that segment.
b.ii. Because this method was conducted by pure observation and estimation, human error was to be considered but not significantly.
b.iii. The number of segments occupied by the turf algae provides us with the abundance and distribution of the species in various parts of the shore.
c. pH and Oxygen Readings
c.i. Data loggers and electrodes were used to measure the

Location of the stream was not the only factor that could have contributed to the abundance of algae abundance and macroinvertebrates diversity, the surroundings also contributed. Tyler Run stream is located on a college campus, this means that it bears the burden of college students trash, it has chemicals from the pesticides the college uses, and the fertilizer the college uses. All these things can affect the streams cleanliness and inhabitants. A lot of pollution ends up in the Tyler Run river and this can lead to an increase or decrease of algae and macroinvertebrates. Our data showed an opposite effect of our hypothesis, this results could be seen because of the riparian buffer having an effect on the stream. A riparian buffer helps…

The flat periwinkle is a small snail that lives on seaweeds growing on rocky shores in New England. Among the snail’s enemies is the European green crab. As its name suggests, the European green crab is not native to North America. It traveled from Europe early in the 19th century. Before 1900, the green crab did not occur north of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After the turn of the century, however, the crab expanded its range northward, and is now found as far north as Nova Scotia. The crab’s range expansion introduced periwinkle populations north of Cape Cod to a new predator.…

The species interaction in the Florida Everglades had gone through difficult times, but the awareness of the needs of this area have made it possible to help build a healthy living species. The fresh water that is currently coming into the Florida Bay from the Everglades is creating perfect conditions for beds of turtle grass and algae formation that are the foundation for animal life. Sea turtles and manatees eat the grass, and worms, clams, and other mollusks eat the algae formations and microscopic…

franciscana distribution frequency were significant (X2calc = 49.4, X2crit = 7.81, df = 3, p < 0.05). This was also the case for the pH treatment (X2calc = 104.2, X2crit = 7.81, df = 3, p < 0.05). The result of the light treatment is supported by the Biology 108 Lab Manual (2015) which states that A. franciscana feed on photosynthetic phytoplankton which inhabit areas of light but are also susceptible to predation in high light. This describes the idea that A. franciscana require a fine balance of light in its environment to be able to feed without predation and therefore will show preference. Furthermore, the results of the pH treatment are also supported by Dhaheri (2004) who reported that A. franciscana can survive pH ranges between 7 and 10 with 8 being ideal for cysts (eggs) to…

    Black Sea Snail Facts

Black periwinkles are a type of marine snail. Periwinkles may live out of the water for several days and can survive in challenging conditions. Out of the water, they can stay moist by closing the trap doors on the opening of their shells. This is called an operculum. Periwinkles are herbivores that feed on algae such as, Green algae and diatoms. Green algae is common in areas where light is abundant, such as shallow water or rock pools. They use their radular (tiny teeth) to scrape algae off of rocks. Green algae can range from single-celled organisms to multi-celled organisms, such as Sea lettuce (Ulva Lactuca). They live in large colonies , close to water. Periwinkle’s diets consist mainly of green algae. On the day of our data collection, we noted that our transect on Broulee Island was facing south and was constantly exposed to sunlight during the daylight hours. During the time frame that we were there, the black periwinkles were moving towards the damper, unders and crevices of the rocks, or staying close to the three rock pools in our transect. This suggests that the rising temperature and the fact that the tide was in the process of coming in, effected the distribution and placement of the periwinkles. The periwinkles were found closer to the middle of our transect, as they were not in the ocean, but were still exposed to shallow rockpools and therefore had access to green algae.…
