1. Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), an illness caused from the ingestion of saxitoxins. It is caused by HAB’s and there effects on shellfish, which are then consumed. Leaves the victim in a state of paralysis as symptoms progress. Death can result from respiratory failure. Neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP), sickness caused by the result of ingesting shellfish contaminated by brevetoxin. Symptoms include nausea and neurological symptoms like slurred speech.

2. If harmful algae blooms were to occur in major fishing areas it could lead to major economic issues. The fishing market would be devastated, as the marine organisms of the area have been contaminated. Many people would be out of work. There would be a substantial amount of money put into the recovery of the area.

3. Many of the symptoms related to shellfish poisoning can be easily confused with that of common illnesses. It would be nearly impossible to trace the illness to the source of contaminated fish. Many would never think to relate nausea to HAB related poisoning, as there are many more common illnesses.

4. Due to the agriculture throughout the Gulf Coast there is an increased chance of runoff of pesticides that enhance the ability of algae to multiple and consume the oxygen in the water space and leave the organisms helpless. Being a heavily populated area there is a lot of pollution being put into the water.

5. HAB’s release harmful toxins as well as removing oxygen from the area and blocking sunlight. The organisms in the area are depleted of oxygen and sunshine leaving them to die in the now baron ocean

    V. vulnificus is a gram-negative marine bacterium that is present in high numbers of seafood (shellfish, raw oysters, clams, etc). Inflammation seen in wound infections, endotoxic shock, and tissue necrosis are characteristic symptoms associated with V. Vulnificus. These symptoms are attributed to the endotoxic activity of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) lending itself as a primary virulence factor in V. vulnificus. LPS is a fever-inducing polypeptide that also produces metabolic changes in the hypothalamus. In addition, LPS engenders a cytokine response in mice that contributes to the release and overproduction of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a). In V. vulnificus cytokines are known to arouse inflammatory responses in the host; and it has been suggested that overactive cytokine induction to the site of infection may cause septic shock, trademark sign of V. vulnificus disease.…

Hypoxic zones can occur naturally, but scientists are concerned about the areas created or enhanced by human activity. There are many physical, chemical, and biological factors that combine to create dead zones, but nutrient pollution is the primary cause of those zones created by humans. Excess nutrients that run off land or are piped as wastewater into rivers and coasts can stimulate an overgrowth of algae, which then sinks and decomposes in the water. The decomposition process consumes oxygen and depletes the supply available to healthy marine life (What is a dead zone?). Since these dead zones are becoming more popular, the animal life is becoming less suitable for more areas. When a dead zone occurs the fish that swim into the arewa get stuck and eventually die from lack of oxygen. Overall, the Bay has lost 98 percent of its oysters, about 80 percent of grasses. Looking at the pictures of dead zones there is a clear view of how terrible this disease is to the ecosystem. The whole bottom of the bay is clear of any living organism. In the Chesapeake Bay and many other areas the dead zones are formed by nutrients from agriculture and urban development within the Bay’s watershed, or the area of land that drains into a body of water, are washed into the Bay in excess quantities. These excess nutrients…

    Sea Lion Research Paper

Sea lions have been affected in the worst ways and their well-being has been gradually declining for years at our hands. Fertilizers and pesticides are causing algae to emit toxins into the ocean that harm sea life.According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, algae produce toxic blooms when they overfeed on nutrients and such as phosphorous, nitrogen, and carbon, ingredients mainly found in fertilizers and pesticides. Such nutrients are not usually found in such abundance in oceanic environments. Therefore, the overfeeding is due to fertilizer and pesticide found in runoff, brought to the oceans via storm drain from agricultural or suburban areas. Humans are using more than necessary amounts of these pesticides that are harming the ocean in runoff due to the excess amounts. The National Center for Coastal Ocean Science states that harmful algal blooms do occur naturally; however, human activities have increased such toxicity in the waters such as…

There were three different occasion where people were poisoned with TTX, once in 1996, then in two in 2014. There might have been more, however, it was not reported to the CDC or the FDA. The first case in 1996 was in California where three people were poisoned. The amount of Fugu that they ate range from ¼ -1 ½ Oz and all three cases begin showing symptoms within 20 minutes of ingesting the contaminated fish (“Tetrodotoxin Poisoning”, 1996). The victims were sent to the local emergency department where the medical practitioner could support them until the toxin was resolve. The reason for this outbreak was because a chef brought the Fugu prepackaged, ready to eat product from Japan and did not declare the fish with customs. The chef shared the Fugu with other chefs in California where the outbreak occurs (“Tetrodotoxin Poisoning”,…

“Puffer fish can blink and close their eyes, which is very unusual. There are few fish that can accomplish this” (Alward 1). Puffer fish can inflate themselves into a by taking in massive amounts of water and sometimes air (“Puffer fish” 2). The poison found in puffer fish as well as in blowfish, balloon fish, toads, sunfish, porcupine fish, toadfish, globefish, and swellfish is a tetrodotoxin. It is one of many toxins in nature known to be very poisonous (“Puffer fish Poisoning” 2). Tetrodotoxin is very deadly to humans because it is 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. The puffer fish’s tetrodotoxin can kill 30 humans. Yet, there is no known cure or antidote created to fight off puffer fish poisoning (“Pufferfish” 2). The reason why I chose to do a term paper on the effects of tetrodotoxin in puffer fish is because not many people are aware of the dangers of eating puffer fish. Also, I wanted to know if there is a cure for puffer fish poisoning. I have heard from the past that puffer fish and blowfish are poisonous because of their skin and body parts and that eating either one is disastrous. My topic has several biological information, cause and effects of puffer fish poisoning, chemical reactions, and chemical formulas.…

NOAA says these two chemicals cause an enormous loss of marine life because too much of either chemical creates hypoxic (dead) zones. Hypoxic zones occur when there is an excess amount of nitrogen or phosphorous in the water and they kill everything except for algae. The algae thrives in these conditions. Fertilizers and pesticides are one of the main sources of ocean harm because they both contain an abundance of nitrogen and phosphorous. Prohibiting the use of these two things could initially cause a problem for farmers and raise the price of crops, however, farmers could use compost instead of fertilizer and fire ants for…

Mortalities in all groups were recorded throughout the experiment and summarized in Table 1. No mortalities were recorded in the control group throughout the experimental period. Table 1 show that the highest mortality rate occurred in Nile tilapia fish in the S. iniae+ C. albicans infected group (76.19%), followed by those infected with S. iniae alone (61.9%) and then the C. albicans infected group (57.14%). Clinically, the S. iniae-infected fish exhibited loss of appetite, loss of equilibrium with erratic movement, swam near to the surface of water, detachment of scales, hemorrhages on the different parts of body surface, slight abdominal dropsy, slight exophthalmia (unilateral…
