Biology Unit 4 Study Guide
Biology Unit 4
Chapter 1:
“Terrible Lizards”
Paleontologist: someone who studies “ancient organisms”
Paleobiology – the study of ancient life
Paleontology is particularly important with regard to scientific theory, since for many children dinosaurs are the first exposure to scientific concepts
Early Dino Stuff
In 1676- large meat- eating femur (Megalosaurus) was discovered and people thought it was a giant human’s scrotum – “Scrotum humanum”
First scientific name given to dinosaur
Prior to 1800s dino tracks were considered bird tracks
Thomas Jefferson was a big supporter of early paleontology
First written record of dinos were found in China
Extinction
Mosasaur: in 1770 giant, 40 foot long sea monster- not a dinosaur
Baron George Cuvier examined the specimen and argued that the Mosasaur had died long ago
Cuvier was a very influential man and was considered a genius, people for the first time gave serious consideration to the possibility that animals have gone extinct
Megalosaurus
“Big Reptile”
Discovered by Reverend William Buckland
Realized it was a reptile based on the teeth
Thought it should have a build of like a monitor lizard or giant crocodile- thought they were quadrupedal
Early interpretations of dinos were based off this idea- they were way off
Iguanodon
“Iguana tooth”
Discovered by Gideon Mantell
First described Herbivorous dino
Caused a lot of excitement because a plant eating dino had not been found yet
Dinosauria
“fearfully great reptiles”
Named by Sir Richard Owen in 1842
Forced to conclude that dinosaurs were their own unique and formerly unrecognized group of reptilians
His characteristics:
Giant (We now know this isn’t universal)
Possessing upright stances
Non-aquatic
Having more than 2 sacral vertebrae (backbones fused together in the hip region)
Archosaurian Reptiles
Dinosaurs are archosaurian reptiles and so are:
Crocodilians and pterosaurs – extinct flying reptiles
Also include “dinosauromorphs” – extinct dinosaurs- like reptiles

    Why Do Comb Jelly Exist

    • 4 Pages

The discovery of the Comb jelly which was the first animal fossil was a shocking and unexpected event to most scientists in the world. Scientists had a specific view about evolution. They thought that organisms evolve from a simple state to a more complex state. But that was not the case for the comb jelly which unlike what scientist thought was a very complex specie. It was so complex that it had a nervous system and tissues. But that was not the only misconception that they had to face. Another problem was that scientist believed for so long that the sponge was the first animal fossil, but this discovery has changed the order of species in the tree of life.
They could not find the date of when Comb jellies have first existed. But if there existence predates the existence of…

The dig had been full of surprises, trying to move the tools and volunteers safely down the 85-foot sinkhole had been a challenge. Moreover, the fossils found were well over 100,000 years old. The animals included an American lion, camel and mammoth. While the discovery in northern Utah was unique with over 300 complete fossils found to date, it was minor compared to what Samantha was looking at. As Mark her graduate student continued to remove small particles of sediment with a dentist pick, Samantha stood in wonder watching…

Micheal Crichton’s 1990 novel “Jurassic Park,” is a science fiction cautionary tale of how reckless experimentation without proper oversight can lead to catastrophic results. The novel revolves around an isolated Costa Rican island and the dangerous experiments taking place there. When a series of mysterious animal attacks begin to occur on mainland Costa Rica, a connection is made between the attacks and the “biological reserve” on Isla Nublar. Two paleontologists Allen Grant and Ellie Sattler are among the group whisked away by billionaire John Hammond to the island for a weekend. The island is revealed to be Jurassic Park, a themed park showcasing the world’s first cloned dinosaurs. The scientists at John Hammond’s research company, InGen, used dinosaur DNA found in the blood of parasites preserved in amber to reconstruct dinosaurs. All the dinosaurs in the…

Morris, Ph.D. (icr.org, 1989), the author states that dinosaurs are all too often taught under the theory of evolution, yet hold a strong presence in Biblical references as well. Much like the evidence of age old fossils, dinosaurs have a significant role in interpreting the age of existence, and also help support the beliefs within the origin of Progressive Creationism. A balance and explanation between Scripture and science is necessary with the geological evidence that there was an era of dinosaurs walking the earth. The topic of dinosaurs then lends itself perfectly to the philosophy of Progressive Creationism where days described in Genesis took place over long periods of time. Dinosaurs can be categorized as one of the many species created and described in Genesis.…

The fossils were found nearly every continent. Fossils are still being examined and observed today. Dinosaurs are closely related to the modern birds, who are warm blooded. New evidence has showed that dinosaurs have been known to be cold blooded but evidence has showed differently. New evidence shows dinosaurs regulated their body temperature from an internal stance than using the environment to help regulate their body temperature. Dinosaurs has homologous features of other animals of their time. Research supports that dinosaurs are warm blooded.…

    Neanderthal Traumas

Spearheaded by the Germans discovery of the skullcap and limbs, archaeologists gather information, make inferences, and use their imaginations to construct how things use to be. The conditions of the fossils let us know the kinds of conditions people/animals lived in. This can be problematic because for example, Neanderthal bones and deer bones were mixed together with some of the same marks. An archaeologist could have mixed up the bones and given the Neanderthal a characteristic of life that isn’t accurate to them. This could be the case for any fossil that isn’t easily identifiable and archaeologists have to use their “imaginations.”…

    3. Paleontology is the study of fossils, including fossilized plants and animals. Fossil are any perceived remains of a prehistoric organism, in this cause an ancient primate. The dig was lead by Dr. Biren Patel and along with a group of scientist, a partial mandible of an early primate was found in the Kashmir region of India. The fossilized mandible was DNA tested and compared to several modern organism in order to determine the closest living relation. The closest relation to the fossils DNA matched to modern day lemurs. However, this is perplexing as…

The Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event, or the K-T event, is the name given to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and other species that took place about 65 million years ago. For many years, paleontologists believed this event was caused by climate and geological changes that interrupted the dinosaurs' food supply. However, in the 1980s, father-and-son scientists Luis (1911-88) and Walter Alvarez (1940- ) discovered in the geological record, a distinct layer of iridium (an element found in abundance only in space) that corresponds to the precise time the dinosaurs died. This suggests that a comet, asteroid or meteor impact event may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. In the 1990s, scientists located the massive Chicxulub Crater at the tip of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, which dates to the period in question.…

Tyrannosaurus Rex, represented by a skull and a tooth in the Earth Sciences Museum, was a fierce carnivorous predator and scavenger that lived in the late Cretaceous, 68 - 66 million years ago. Weighing in at over 7 tons, over 4 metres tall at its hips and 12 metres in length, it is one of the most recognizable dinosaurs19. It is a lizard hipped, or Saurischian, dinosaur. Although it is often portrayed as a predator, it also scavenged, similar to many modern mammals4.…
