Bipolar me
What is bipolar disorder? Can you catch it? While researching this paper, I decided to ask actual people what they thought bi-polar disorder was. I was astonished at how people perceived it. I decided that I needed to define it. I need to further peoples education on it. 27 million people suffering from the disease while millions more are misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. “On average a typical bipolar person is diagnosed about ten years after the initial onset of symptoms. Most people are diagnosed between ages 19-25.” (Susan Lockwood RNP)Education is the first step in recognizing mental health issues. In order to detect the disorder in early development, an educational system must be put into place in middle school where most signs and symptoms surface. Even though there is the large percentage of people with bipolar disorder, it is the most misunderstood mental illness because there is a lack of knowledge and a misunderstanding of the signs and symptoms.
Even though 27 million people worldwide are affected by bipolar disorder, it is still widely misunderstood. (Owen) “Mania is...constant anxiety, constant irritability, having everything is raw, being brittle, crying but feeling nothing, and really. . . Just you never know” (Anon). “Bi-polar is an “Alice in wonderland” disease you’re either the red queen or Alice.” (Me) Many people see bipolar as a bad habit that a person can just ignore or get rid of with a flick of the magic wand. So many people refuse to see there loved one in an unkind light that they ignore the problem and stigmatize it. “When they find out you have it, suddenly you’re a carrier monkey , and they might catch it.”(Behrman) When I asked my neighbor what he knew about the disease he said “Isn’t that the one where they see stuff and hear voices.”
