Birds of Canada Notes

a. Ospreys and Great Horned Owls both have 3 front toes and 1 back toes with large, curved claws. Also, they both have a hooked beak. One difference is that the Great Horned owl has large, forward-looking eyes, making it ideal to hunt at night in forests. The osprey, on the other hand is ideal for catching fish near water during the day.

b. Both the purple martin and woodpecker have eyes on the side of their heads. However, the beaks and talons of these birds are different. A woodpecker would be more suited in an area full of trees that it can use its chisel-shaped beak for breaking into trees. A purple martin on the other hand would be more suited for a habitat where there are insects in the air to catch and eat using its short, pointed, trap-like beak.

c. The great blue heron and the common snipe both have spear-shaped beaks for spearing fish. However, the common snipe’s feet are suited more for perching on branches while the great blue heron’s feet are more suited for wading or walking on mud/sand.

2. These birds may not have needed wings for their survival, relying on running to survive instead.

3. Hollow bones give birds the ability to fly because if their bones were solid, they would be too heavy for flight.

4. Hummingbirds have wings that allow them to hover over flowers so it is easier for them to probe them for nectar.

5. Birds that have to occupy highly specific niches would have that much difficulty adapting to environmental change because environmental changes occur over time and adaptions in birds occur over time as well. As long as there isn’t a major environmental change from natural disasters, the birds should be safe.

6. Birds may require more than one habitat because if a certain predator is very common in one habitat, the bird will need another habitat to relocate to to avoid being killed.

7. Certain birds are endangered because in parts of the world, there are birds that have very successful adaptations that

The Beak of the Finch opens with Peter and Rosemary Grant studying their well-recognized finches on one of the islands on the Galápagos called Daphne Major. The couple records their data carefully, collecting the birds’ wing length, tarsus length, beak length, beak depth, plumage and weight. The reader first notices and questions such tedious, meticulous measurements of the simple finch. However, later, the novel reveals later that the precise measurements these scientists are taking are crucial, especially for the bird. The Grants briefly review the bird’s history, including its age, how often it had bred and any offspring it had raised. Recording information about each of the finches on Daphne Major is an important part of studying evolution. The novel explains that not many scientists have actually studied evolution, though it is an extremely important subject in science. Darwin’s theory of natural selection has been neglected, with very few experiments testing its extraordinary capability. It actually seems as if no one realizes the power of Darwin’s theory, not even Darwin himself.…

With the continued research of the NABPP and the help of volunteers, we are able to understand the change in the migrational patterns of these birds and we are one step closer to solving the issue at hand. After researching this project, I am able to conclude that Barn Swallows are attracted to areas of warm temperature and a climate that encourages breeding. These locations act as grounds that offer materials to build nest and the females lay their eggs with other female Barn Swallows protecting the eggs and soon to be nestlings. I am definitely not surprised about the results due to the extended damage humans have had on planet Earth. As the human population continues to grow, the Earth crumples and the availability of natural resources continues to decrease. The population of other species, including Barn Swallows, have been impacted by the human impact on Earth. Climate change is a consequence that we continue to face due to the weakening of the Earth. Birds will continue to experience change and migrational differences if climate change continues to be hindered. If this was my Project, I would continue to use volunteer observations because it offers diverse sources to analysis. Being that the question at hand was concerning migrational patterns and population status of the birds, I would add the following questions: “Does the diet of the birds cause migrational change?” “Does…
