Birth of a Nation
Racism has been around since the beginning of time. Basically if you had a skin tone darker than the shade of white, you were inferior. Times have now changed, but there are remnants of this subject everywhere, even in film. The movie Birth of a Nation is considered one of the greatest films of all time, even with these themes. AMC’s Filmsite even has it listed within the 100 Greatest Films of All Time. Another movie with the some of the same themes is Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature as Birth of a Nation, but it does deserve to be higher in the canon. I do believe that Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature because it is a comedy with crude humor and because it has a black sheriff as the protagonist. The D. W. Griffith film was considered controversial and is still considered controversial to this day. Basically it paints the story of the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. Of course the KKK members were the heroes of the story and saved everyone from harm. The film uses white actors painted in black face to portray freed slaves. It also portrays them as savages and rapists. There was not one “black” person in the film that wasn’t considered a villain. During the voting scene, blacks were seen taking over the polls while the whites had their votes taken away. One quote in the movie when talking about a village says, “In the villages the negroes were the office holders, men who knew none of the uses of authority.” The freed slaves were just looked at as all around incompetent in the film and off film. Also, sometimes there would be African Americans in the background. You would assume that they are actors and could be used to star in the film as well.

I will agree that the film was before its time cinematography wise and even subject wise. The movie was around three hours long, I have to give it credit to be made in 1915. That is impressive. It even had a super impressive budget and made a ton of money at the box

Griffith received a lot of backlash for his famous In the Birth of a Nation; his point of view was actually defending the South, the slave owners, and even the KKK. He always portrayed many of the men of color as rapists and monsters. He was actually forced to cut scenes before letting audiences view the film for the bigoted racism he had…

Lack of Diversity is largely due to lack of accurate representation. The roles commonly given to black actors and actresses are stereotypical roles. The stereotypical roles first emerged in D.W Griffith's Birth of a Nation. The film is revered as the first film to use groundbreaking cinematic techniques. However the film is incredibly racist displaying african americans in a negative light. It was one of the first films to use blackface. This film paved a way for other films in regards to stereotypical representation of blacks.…

Blazing saddles is a movie made in 1975 that was directed by Mel Brooks. The movie is a western that portrays a "perfect" white town that has lost its sheriff and is in need of a new one. Through the corrupt white government a new sheriff is sent to the town but he is black. This reverse of rolls in authority is a common base of humor among most people. It would be as though a peasant was sent to rule a group of nobles and kings. This doesn't make much sense, and watching the reaction of the people when they see their new sheriff is comical. Another reverse in common roles is the portrayal of the white people being the stupid and corrupt ones and the black man being the smart character. The only white character that is portrayed as smart is the only character that isn't racist. This implies that racist are ignorant and dumb. That is a huge change in the way society viewed the racist men during that time period and especially a decade before. One of the most striking aspects of this film is that is was made by a white director and made for a mostly white audience. This shows that there was a significant progression in accepting one another and a definite effort by some of the white community to express to the rest of the country that they needed to accept the blacks too. For a white director, during this time period, to put a black man in the hero position of a movie and poke fun at the ignorance of white racist was a huge step toward tolerance and acceptance.…

Even in the advanced world we live in today, racism is still a strong presence in our everyday lives. Racism today can be seen in a variety of ways that are different than past displays. For instance, my friends that attended public high schools said that they noticed more racism from African Americans toward Caucasians than vice versa. In a lot of movies that are released in theaters today, it seems that the directors do a very good job of not displaying racism in movies, unless the movie is obviously about racism. In one of Mel Brooks’ most well known movies the 1974 film, Blazing Saddles, racism is shown in a different manner than almost any other film. In this movie, racism is depicted as more of a comedy. Cleavon Little plays the role of the first black sheriff in a town scheduled to be demolished by a railroad that is in line for construction. Blazing Saddles is the perfect film to social commentary on racism because as Mel Brooks uses racism in a comedy goes to show how racism has more of a role of comedic relief in this film, not something to run one’s life by.…

There is a long history of showing negative stereotypes in both film and television. The particular negative images used in television and films...come from a long legacy of social inequality and oppression, and their retelling strengthens these beliefs in white supremacy. By showing the negative stereotypes of minorities, the majority is able to justify the subordination of racial minority groups. When stereotypes are shown to us so regularly, negative images of racial minorities become a part of the collective consciousness.…

My favorite movie is Coming to America with Eddie Murphy. The reason this great movie is my favorite is because Eddie Murphy is hilarious and one of my favorite actors in my book. This movie is extremely funny and is basically what I wanted my life to be when I first saw this movie, I wanted to meet a prince, fall in love and get married like every young girl wanted when they were little. This movie was much much more than that in my eyes, it's not your ordinary Cinderella story, it's much deeper. It opened my eyes on how to really deal with responsibilities in this world we live in and being rich and famous is not what it is all cracked up to be, the rich and the famous are more depressed and lonely then the regular average Joe and Jane of…

It is really difficult for people in these days to know the truth about the conditions and circumstances in which the slaves lived in. Even though there are many interviews that have been made to try and find out more about what it was like being a slave in those days, it is hard to know wither the person is telling the truth or not. When most of the interviews were being made, there were still lots of racial feelings towards the African Americans. When an African American was being interviewed by a white person they sometimes would feel intimidated and nervous so most of the time they were extremely careful about what they said and how they portrayed their slave owner. One can see the difference if they read an interview from a black person to black person or a white person to a black person.…
