Birthtnoth's Heroic Behavior
Birthtnoth’s heroic behaviour further emphasizes why “overconfidence” would be the translation that makes the most sense. Heroes are seen as confident figures and I believe that is how Birthtnoth is portrayed. Without Birthtnoth agreeing to take on the Vikings the English would have been seen as cowards, it was his confident behaviour that brought them to war, even though they did loose the war they died fighting which still maintains the heroic elements of the poem. He demonstrates this confidence when he declines the Vikings offer of paying tribute instead of fighting, “It seems to me too shameful that you should go unfought to ship with our tribute, now that you have come thus far into our land” (52-54). Birthtnoth is challenging the Vikings

Western and nonwestern heroes come from different regions of the world; therefore, have different cultural backgrounds. More specifically, western heroes come from the Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions. Nonwestern heroes come from other parts of the world that would not associate with these traditions. While these heroes might seem to have little in common when it comes to origin, “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell demonstrates that all heroes have “similar patterns” (Campbell). However by examining the non-western hero, Mulan, in “The Ballad of Mulan” demonstrates how this figure is different than the hero outlined in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in the following ways, Mulan does not have any kind of “supernatural aid”, “tests that lead to the final showdown”, or a “life-changing experience for her or many others” (Campbell).…

Heroism is being a leader and a helper for other people’s well being. Like spider man, a fictional hero, he was once bullied and he understood how it felt to need someone to help. But once he got his superpowers and he started saving people’s lives, he understood even more how important it is to help other people. He shows great heroism because he is not afraid, he is daring, and cares about the safety of his community. Of course, Odysseus isn’t your friendly neighborhood spider man.…

These actions of heroism don't just occur in literature. Many people have shown acts of heroism. For example Robin Emmons, a woman who had the desire to help bring healthy foods to low income communities, to improve the health of the people in those areas. After experiencing her brother grow borderline diabetic, due to a lack of accessible healthy foods in his transitional homing, she became inspired to help others in need (Geil 1). What she did next was unthinkably selfless; she quit her job and dug up one-fourth of her backyard. She started growing healthy, easily accessible food for people in need. Eventually, she started a non profit organization that delivers healthy foods to people in need, called “Sow much Grod” (Geil 2). Her organization…

“So. The Spear-Danes in days gone by and the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness. We have heard of those princes’ heroic campaigns.” (1-3) In the first few lines of Beowulf, the writer already envelopes you with a sense of uncanny courage. “Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares the man it has not already marked.” (572-573) With Beowulf saying this, he is implying that if your fate has not been pre-decided, then you can pull through anything and succeed, have you enough courage.…

Movies, which show more and tell less, allow potential heroes to prove their heroism with actions and not words. Each movie that we watched for class showed heroism in a different way, much like the ancient Greek and Roman poems told about heroism in a different way. Partially a product of their time, each movie approached a World War in a way that reflected the values of their time, much like how Odysseus’s cunning was praised by the Greeks and condemned by the Romans. However, I think that the sequence of movies matches up quite nicely with the sequence of poems. Comparing The Grand Illusion to the Iliad, Saving Private Ryan to the Aeneid, and Inglourious Basterds to the Odyssey brings out contrasts, like the definition of heroism, between…

A hero can be real or fictional but either way a hero goes through the same stages and has choices to make to help others at whatever cost. Someone may not seem like they could be a hero but by doing what they can, could help make a huge difference in someone’s life. Being a hero is not always what movies and comic books make it out to be; a hero can be a regular person being generous. Making the right choices and decisions is what helps shape a person to be a hero; they don’t become one just for the fame.…

The brave man is not one who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” For both Beowulf and Gilgamesh in the stories “Beowulf” and “The Epic of Gilgamesh,” these leaders fought to be brave for their people. Gilgamesh and Beowulf both had different approaches to their fighting styles, they were well known leaders, their journies differed from one another and the society they lived in had differing beliefs.
