Historians of Illinois should use Black Hawk’s autobiography as a way to portray Illinois before 1865 because, while it was translated and edited it still shows important things that shed light on the life of people who inhabited Illinois before 1865, it shows the culture of the native people of Illinois as well as the story of the Black Hawk War from the view point of the Focusing on how the native people lived and how they felt is important to understand pre-1865 Illinois because although Illinois had been a state since 1818 and settlers had been living there for a long time you need to look at all the different groups of people living in the area to fully understand the history …show more content…
The story is the only document that details the life of Black Hawk in such a way and shows the life of the Sauk during this time. While things may have been changed during translation or Black Hawk may have omitted from his story the autobiography can still be considered an accurate depiction of pre-1865 life if it is looked at with other sources. What can be learned from this source, the Sauk culture and Black Hawks point of view of the Black Hawk War, we can begin to look at how the Sauk tribe lived in Illinois before they moved west ward. This is the only document that details from Black Hawks point of view and since he was such a key player it is important to look at. The answer is not so simple. In terms of looking at the Sauk culture during Black Hawks lifetime and Black Hawks point of view during the Black Hawk Wars it is as accurate as one could hope; meaning that as stated before there could have been things changed during the translation or editing.
