Black Wild Persuasive Analysis
JOHN BLACK RAVEN is a proposed one-hour dramatic western television pilot set in 1865. The world created feels authentic and believable. The old west comes to life.

There’s a lot to like about this pilot and it warrants consideration. The goal of the series is well defined and has merit. The idea of freeing slaves being held illegally and building an army to rescue the protagonist’s son is solid. One can envision the creation of a long-term series based on the pilot.

The stakes are high. The tone is consistently dramatic. The pace works well. The opening sets the tone and establishes the world. The reveal of the dead men in the wagon is a stunning visual. It hooks the audience.

The tension intensifies as the pilot progresses. There are skillfully crafted action sequences, specifically the one in which the “animal” inside Black Raven comes to life. The scene in which Long Feather is attacked is unsettling and unnerving. The visual of Long Feather hanging from the tree is chillingly powerful. There’s a strong all is lost moment when Black Raven is ready to die, only for Nina to save his life.

It’s an emotional and extremely moving moment. The audience is hooked and they want to go on the journey.

The series offers strong and complex characters. There’s no doubt that John Black Raven is a compelling protagonist. He’s easily to like and he’s creates a rooting interest. His counterpart, Nina, the other core leading character, is just as compelling and intriguing. She’s well established as an educated former slave with a strong-will, determined to free all slaves. Her goal is extremely worthy and, again, it’s easy to root for her.

The idea of a Native and a former Black Slave teaming up together is a smart story choice for the series. It’s an unlikely team and it feels

It began with the curiosity of a young African American male, name Wes Moore. Whose name appeared in the Baltimore sun in December of 2000. An article was written announcing that he, a young “fatherless” son of yet another single mother, was receiving a Rhodes scholarship. Little, did he know that, not far from his “memorable” write up in the Baltimore Sun, would be a series of article that would change his life even more than his scholarship that he had earned. What was written, were articles, about another “fatherless” son of the city. A young man, who accompanied three others, in a botched jewelry robbery, that ended with a Police officer being shot and killed.…

Manipulative, persuasive, and cunning are all words that can be used to describe Squealer. In the book, Animal Farm he’s described as a fat pig with a shrill voice, nimble movements, and a brilliant talker. Squealer has a way with words. He’s good at talking and getting people to see his way. He can change people’s perspective on things. “The others said of Squealer that he could turn black into white” (Orwell 16). Persuasion comes easily to Squealer. He knows just what to say to get someone on the same page as him. He can make people see one thing as something completely different. Slavery has always been a sensitive topic in America. The slave era is a shameful chapter in our history and provokes a slew of emotions. For Tarantino to create a mainstream film that revolved around slavery was both ambitious and risky. This was a risk well worth taking because the final result was sensational. More than 97% of climate scientists agree that we, humans, are causing climate change by burning fossil fuels and cutting down trees. Too bad trees don’t provide us with Wi-Fi or money, we’d be planting them like crazy, unfortunately, however, they only provide us with the oxygen that we breathe. There shouldn’t be any debate about whether global warming is real or not, we know its real, there’s numerous evidence to support that, instead it should be what we’re going to do about it.…

He was entirely black, right down to the legs, beak, and glaring eyes; some sort of Raven but somewhat different. He was bigger than any Raven Wendy had ever seen before; and scarier looking too. He emanated menace. He turned his head to watch Wendy. Wendy did not like his stare. This stupid bird is not going to frighten me; but yet he did and he didn’t look stupid. “Scat!” she yelled at the bird and waved her hands in the air franticly, trying to scare the bird away. The massive bird bristles its glossy black feathers; all the while never taking its eyes off of Wendy. I don’t doubt this bird eats rabbits or even foxes, that razor sharp beak would tear into any flesh easily. Slowly the bird spreads his majestically huge wings. What the heck is he doing? Crap I think it is getting ready to swoop down on me like I was a rabbit or fox. “You win, I am out of here.” Shaking all over Wendy turns and blindly runs away. “Please don’t attack me, please don’t attack me” Wendy whispers’ as she runs deep into the fog that is now surrounding her. The bird’s eyes don’t stop watching Wendy even in her departure. Laughter erupts again. After a few minutes the gigantic raven leapt from…
