There’s a lot to like about this pilot and it warrants consideration. The goal of the series is well defined and has merit. The idea of freeing slaves being held illegally and building an army to rescue the protagonist’s son is solid. One can envision the creation of a long-term series based on the pilot.
The stakes are high. The tone is consistently dramatic. The pace works well. The opening sets the tone and establishes the world. The reveal of the dead men in the wagon is a stunning visual. It hooks the audience.
The tension intensifies as the pilot progresses. There are skillfully crafted action sequences, specifically the one in which the “animal” inside Black Raven comes to life. The scene in which Long Feather is attacked is unsettling and unnerving. The visual of Long Feather hanging from the tree is chillingly powerful. It’s an emotional and extremely moving moment. The audience is hooked and they want to go on the journey.
The series offers strong and complex characters. There’s no doubt that John Black Raven is a compelling protagonist. He’s easily to like and he’s creates a rooting interest. His counterpart, Nina, the other core leading character, is just as compelling and intriguing. She’s well established as an educated former slave with a strong-will, determined to free all slaves. Her goal is extremely worthy and, again, it’s easy to root for her.
The idea of a Native and a former Black Slave teaming up together is a smart story choice for the series. It’s an unlikely team and it feels
