After the Civil War, the southern soldiers were going back to devastated cities, destroyed railroads, and many cities were burned to the ground as a result of Sherman’s march from sea to sea. After the Civil War occurred, the slaves were given freedom from their owners, and slavery was banned. That attempt at reconstruction was not a complete fail, but it took a little bit of time for America to give social and economic equality to slaves. There were many attempts made by several different presidents, but not all seemed to work due to the South’s stubbornness. The failure of reconstruction later did not bring social and economic equality to former slaves in the south because of things like the Jim Crow laws and the South’s strong disproval of the outcome of the war.…

The Reconstruction was a major event that happened after the Civil War. It helped end slavery and give rights to freedmen. They also came up with two new amendments, the 14th and the 15th amendments. Reconstruction became a struggle over the meaning of freedom, with former slaves, former slaveholders and Northerners adopting different definitions. Eventually, faced with increasing opposition by white Southerners and some Northerners, the government abandoned efforts for black equality in favor of sectional reconciliation between whites.…

The political freedom of the former slaves was one of the best handled points of the reconstruction. When the thirteenth amendment was passed it stated that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude … shall exist in the United states” ( the thirteenth amendment to the constitution). This amendment was written to show the united states that slavery was going to end and they were forced to relent. The next major step forward was the passing of the 15th amendment in 1870. This…
Although slavery was abolished, the few whites in the south didn't take it well; instead they depended on brutal opposition to the new world being created around them. African Americans were free, however they actually had only a couple of civil privileges and no voice in government. The Civil War created far-changing changes in American life. For example, the end of slavery, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which liberated slaves in Confederate states. During the late spring of 1862 Lincoln concluded that the Emancipation was required because the military wasn't succeeding in any of the wars they were in.…
The Thirteenth Amendment banned slavery and involuntary servitude, except if used for punishments. America entered a period of time called reconstruction. At first African Americans began gaining rights such as the right to have black males vote, and that all African Americans were citizens. Things soon got worse and white supremacy groups started attacking freedmen (slaves that were freed) and racial equality supporters. Also federal support started to fail.…

When slavery was ended by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865 there were at least 4 million slaves who were granted freedom. Many of the slaves had trouble getting jobs, finding families, and even trouble with education The slaves did not know how to be free and white people didn't know how to have a free colored person around them. It says that Holloway's words reflect the time after the Civil War. The Reconstruction period.…
White Privilege White privilege is shown today through education, employment, criminal justice, housing, and more, which all have roots leading back to the Reconstruction Era. White privilege is the privilege of getting advantages just because you’re white, even if you don’t deserve it. Bias towards white people allows them more opportunities and experiences than other races. During the Reconstruction Era, Jim Crow laws were holding back African Americans from accessing land and getting the same education as white kids, white supremacists and supporters constantly hated and hurt black people without punishment, and the Ku Klux Klan targeted black people for foolish reasons. Around the time of the Civil Rights movement, there were constant hate crimes, many of which were targeted towards…
The period after the Civil War is best known as the Reconstruction Era. The Reconstruction era took place from around 1865 to 1877, it is a period of time where the United States began to rebuild its government, economy, and the life of U.S citizens after the major destruction caused by the Civil War in 1865. After the Civil War was over, the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments were ratified to the U.S Constitution abolishing slavery everywhere, granting citizenship to all persons born in the United States, and giving equal protection of the laws and suffrage to all men (p511). Later, after the Civil War had concluded, the Thirteenth Amendment emancipated the entire populace of African American slaves across the United States. Furthermore, the Reconstruction that followed the Civil War worked to create social, political, and economic equality for both races. However, the South was opposed to working and living with African Americans, who they considered inferior to their own race.…
