Valedictorian Speech

My five-year tenure in blah ran the gamut from sweet to bitter. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the hoard of knowledge and experience that I have accumulated in this span of time has made my well of wisdom seemingly bottomless. I draw on these depthless riches of mine to help keep me afloat in the tempestuous, shark-infested waters of life.

Each unique experience has given me new vision and a fresh perspective on life and education.

From being a dewy-eyed schoolboy, a socially inept and gauche teen, living in his own bubble, indifferent to the world and unfolding around him, to being transformed into a man firmly anchored in the school’s core principles and in the know of matters close to home. I have the school to thank for molding me and endowing me with such enriching experiences. I also have to pour out my gratification to the indefatigable teachers who give of their time and effort with such largesse to help prepare us for the imminent national examinations. More importantly, however, I would like to thank them for their going beyond the syllabus of their subjects to teach us the fundamentals being human and to have a heart. Indeed, a person can climb up the corporate ladder and make a name and fortune for themselves but without their humanity and ethics intact, that person remains but a cold, bitter person who chases after worldly desires.

However, there is something stifling and almost poisonous about abandoning your passions.
Increased my trajectory, and aimed for the stars in the academic sphere.
Being implacable in ambition; academically precocious.

“Students will float to the mark you set,” said Mike Rose (Rose 110). Every day students are being held to a lower standard. Not only does this happen at school, but in the home life as well. Today’s generation seems to have a lot of things done for them. We just hand out A’s, and allowance that hasn’t even been earned. From these poor examples being set for us, we lose the motive and drive that it takes to succeed. People are going through life with a sense that they are owed something.…

Pursuing something new is fun and exciting, especially if the pursuit positively impacts someone else. I am grateful for the opportunity to re-enter grad school, this time at the doctorate level, to realize a dream that I’ve had since the beginning of my teaching career. My goal is to be sharp, skilled, creative and effective as a teacher and leader so that I can significantly influence the organization and overall culture of my school, other teachers, students, and the community. A necessary attribute of a great teacher should be the desire to seek ways to improve learning for all children. I am committed to learning and developing the knowledge and skills that a great leader needs to make a difference in education. I believe all students can have academic success.…

We are writing to you to advocate for the continuance of Miss. Degenhardt’s (Profe) teaching career at Darien High School. We write with the purpose to make you aware of Profe’s profound impact on the community and the growth of her students both in the context of academics and ethics; her notable qualities and dedication to her profession are of a role model. While Profe’s style of teaching is unorthodox at some points, this unorthodoxy provides students with a diverse and meaningful education in an otherwise, orthodox day. A quality that is central to Profe’s teaching and persona is her receptiveness to student opinion, which in our opinion should be a constant in all student-teacher relationships. For example, if a student feels that a decision in terms of either a grade or punishment she made was unjust, Profe is fully open to a one-on-one discussion, either during a mutual free or before or after school. Profe’s actions reject the notion of “my way or the highway” and epitomize the characteristic of open-mindedness: a quality that is crucial in our increasingly globally connected society. For a personal anecdote, during a student’s sophomore year he felt that he did not deserve grade X; therefore, he approached Profe and asked to meet with her before school. The student and Profe discussed the grade and while the grade remained unchanged, he had a better understanding as to why he received grade X and how he can avoid receiving grade X in the future. In another, unrelated circumstance, Profe organizes an annual in-class food drive to afford families in the Bronx a decent Thanksgiving meal, which reveals her altruism and devotion to paying it forward. Moments such as these are what define Profe’s impact and overall career to DHS and academia. As a community, we are here to support a teacher who has supported us. Thank you in advance for your time.…

The modern Marine NCO is the embodiment of the Corp’s history and traditions because we are the back bone of the Marine Corps. We are the small unit leaders and through our strive, motivation and dedication, I believe its our duty to pass on the knowledge to our junior Marines as many other NCO’s have and are doing today. We do this by carrying the tradition of making sure the the history and traditions are still being remembered and enforced by taking the initiative and time to learn about our history and traditions first; if we know nothing or very little about our traditions and history, we would not be able to pass on any knowledge. As an NCO you are the first “teacher”, mentor, and example to junior Marines. It all starts from the first day you take Marines under your charge; the way you act around your Marines, when showing common courtesies is another way we keep our traditions going. Lastly, the modern NCO’s are taught to follow the traditions and history of the past and; therefore, we have to continue to do the same. In the following I will further explain in greater detail about why I chose these reasons.…

I still can recall the feeling of pure unadulterated fear, and even thinking about it now gives me that sense of dread that has become all too familiar. Every first day was slightly different, but they all had the same effect on me, the uncomfortable feeling of being on the chopping block. In four years, I have experienced the feeling of brand new faces staring at me with harsh, judgemental eyes 4 times, something most high schoolers have to endure only once, if at all. However, these four different educational institutions have brought more than just scholarly concepts into my mind. They have each bent and contorted me in ways that have forced me to learn to become inure. Each transfer required me to adapt and learn to make friends with people who were not…

    I Just Wanna Be Average

Mike Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average” essay makes me mad, but, at the same time, it makes me realize how lucky I am. I had never been in a special program, so I never thought about the students who were in those programs. Actually, my school had the kind of vocational track that the essay introduced, but I didn’t care about them because I wasn’t part of the track. Therefore, I really didn’t know that the students who were in that kind of special programs could be lost their identity due to poor instruction and suffered from lacking of motivation. Reading this essay, I double-checked that education needs the harmony of students, teachers, and its system. Temporarily, I thought, if there were more teachers who thought like Mr.MacFarland in reality, students would embrace learning because Mr.MacFarland truly knows how to speak to a student.…

Unfulfilled or not, everybody has passions. In this essay I would like to touch on the importance of pursuing passions, or if you like, following your heart. The pursuit of passion doesn't necessarily mean you should quit your day job to follow it. For instance I have a passion for photography, but it would be less than plausible for me to quit my job and pursue it as my career. It may be different for someone else, again I have an example from my own personal passions. Eventually in my life I want to open a restaurant. This would mean, that I would have to quit my job and devote my life to it. I realize that my passion involves hard work and perseverance, and even the chance of failure, but I believe that following your passion involves a certain of amount of risk.…

I must first remind you of the unrest among our fellow students before I begin to examine the pandemonium we currently suffice as home. Our generation is at war with the complicated reality of this stringent society and we must no longer allow mainstream practices to dictate our freedom. The time is now for us to shed the constraints of our parents’ generation and provide a change that will bring authenticity to America’s youth! We standup not just for ourselves but for those of tomorrow and to change the norms of today.…

Students will continue on their journey of learning, even when that journey is unbearably painful. We must hold pure intentions in our hearts and be a society of one as we experience every waking minute at Winton Woods. Rather than see ourselves as a series of fractured constituencies, our unity as warriors is a triumphant strength in the face of hate. And to all of the administrators, teachers, and other educators sitting before me, I ask of you one thing – take this job that you have been given and never look back, because even your mistakes will teach your students immensely. Teach them whatever subject you may teach, and then teach them more. Pledge to help those who have entrusted their futures to you, those entities of civilization that you will be proud to have cultivated. And most importantly, remember these words penned by EM Forster, “spoon feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon.” Education is not for the immediate, but rather for the future and those events we have yet to experience. Thank you for your time and attention this morning, and I hope you feel as proud to be a warrior as I…

As I near the end of my high school career, I realize that I am not the same person who began 3 years ago as a freshman. While my teachers instilled the fundamental aspects of a well-rounded education, I learned through my own experience that education extends beyond the classroom. My activities in academics, athletics, community service and work experience, have instilled qualities in me that will prepare me for the immediate future of college and beyond.…
