Economics in the Real World – Blast Kills Husband and 2 Sons of Missing Woman

The article, “Blast Kills Husband and 2 Sons of Missing Woman” by the Associated Press of the New York Times recollects the death of a father and his two kids. The father, Josh Powell, was directed to attend a psycho-sexual evaluation in order to possibly regain the custody of his children. This decision was determined because Powell’s wife was missing and he did not have a legitimate alibi. Moreover, Powell’s father had been charged with child pornography and the court feared that Powell was somehow involved. The court denied custody of the children, but allowed supervised visits. Impact on internal and external stakeholders When it comes to the impact of this negligent event, it is needless to say that the child, Courtnie Williamson, suffered the worse consequences of all, she will be affected physically, emotionally, and intellectually for the rest of her life; with therapy and willpower she might be able to recover to a certain extent, but there is no certainty on the success of any treatment. This negligent act limited the future of this child and the way that she might be productive and contribute to society; just as important are the enormous consequences for the parents. As much as the courts insist that the parent-child relationship does not have the same dependency as the child-parent bond, there is going…

On August 20, 1995, Shirley Phelps-Roper, attendee of the WBC, heard an explosion outside of her home in Topeka, Kansas sometime after 11:00 pm. After going to see where the noise came from, she called the police department to report the explosion. The police department told her that they had already had news of the blast and that it wasn’t from her house, yet a mile away from where she lives. She had to call them back several times before an officer finally responded to investigate the situation and gather evidence of the crime.…

The article I just read recently, was “Children’s Arrests in Bullying Case Distress Tennessee City” written by Christine Hauser. Hauser writes about how children of the ages of 12 years old were arrested for bullying a boy. There were 10 children involved who were pushing the boy into the street and trying to provoke him into making a move. One of the children was recording the whole incident while the boy was being beaten up and later had posted it on YouTube. After the arrest of the children’s parents and churches started to gather up at the city hall and demand the police officers to drop the charges described as “criminally responsible for the conduct of another”. Zacchaeus and LaVonia Crawford were later on revealed as the mothers…

The obvious problem with Centralia No. 5 is that an explosion killed 111 people. However, prior to the actual explosion, the problem is less obvious, especially since Centralia No. 5 was similar to so many mines that did not explode. In this analysis, I will examine the possible roles and responsibilities of Driscoll O. Scanlan, the mine inspector, given the "corruption of modern administrative enterprises" prior to the accident. From this perspective, the perspective of a public official in the field, the problem is that a potential danger exists and the regulatory machinery in place to address the danger is ineffective. As an expert, Scanlan recommended that the mine be "dusted" with non-explosive, pulverized stone to diminish the possibility of the coal dust's exploding. However, his expert advice alone was not enough to motivate a response.…

In 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her five children in a bathtub in her home. This was very disturbing news. I am a native Houstonian. I was at home that day. The television was on and will never forget the news breaking announcements that broke the story of a homicide in Clear Lake. All the information the reporters had was a mother killed all her children then called the police to report it. The full story and the details that lead to this tragedy did not unfold until years later. It was sad because as details unfolded if Andrea Yates had been treated properly and followed her doctors recommendations the whole situation might have been avoided.…

FACTS: In August of 2003 Detective Shane Blankenship, a social worker, was assigned to investigate and interview Michael Shatzer about claims that Shatzer had sexually abused his three year old son. At the time of the investigation Shatzer was incarcerated at Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown for an unrelated child-sexual abuse offense. Before asking Shatzer any questions, Detective Blankenship informed Shatzer of his rights, Shatzer then obtained a written waiver of those rights. Blankenship proceeded to end the interview, release Shatzer back into the general prison population, and end the investigation. After two years and six months, Dectective Hoover reopened the investigation, interviewed Shatzer's son who was now eight years old, who could now describe the incident in more detail. In March of 2006, Hoover went to Roxbury Correctional Institute to interview Shatzer about sexually abusing his son. After approximately 30 minutes of interviewing, Shatzer agreed to take a polygraph; in which he failed. At no point during this second interview did Shatzer request to speak to a lawyer or refuse to answer Hoover's questions without a lawyer present. After incriminating himself, Shatzer was charged with second-degree sexual offense, sexual child abuse, second-degree assault and contributing to conditions rending a child in need of assistance. In court, Shatzer moved to suppress his March 2006 statements in regards to Edwards v. Arizona, 451 U.S. 477 (1981). The trail court denied his motion. The Court of Criminal Appeals of Maryland reversed the trail courts decision stating that release of Shatzer back into the general prison population did not constitute a break in custody.…

Postpartum depression affects approximately ten to twenty-two percent of women and as many as about eighty percent of women suffer from some sort of “baby blues”. Even so, the much more serious problem of postpartum psychosis only occurs in as few as one in every five hundred births (Williams, 2002). Postpartum psychosis can have catastrophic outcomes, like in the case of Andrea Yates. What should happen to women like Andrea? Prison, the death penalty or a mental institution? Ethical issues, such as postpartum psychosis crimes, are debated using various theories of ethics.…

    Kristin’s Death

This case is based on the death of Kristin whose author is her father. Michael Carter was Kristin’s ex-boyfriend, his past criminal record demonstrates how easy it is for criminals to get away with murder. I’m going to go over some of his past criminal record to demonstrate how Michael Cartier should have never been set free in the streets, and to demonstrate how many opportunities our justice system had to put him away in jail before he committed more crimes. I believe that the best way to present Michael’s criminal history is by covering some of the many encounters he had with our justice system prior to murdering Kristin as well as the consequences for his actions. The first arrest was 1998 for burglary, when arrested Michael was sentenced to six month in jail. However, he never served any time for this crime. Followed by a sledgehammer rampage in 1990. Another incident where our justice system failed to put Michael in jail was on March 28, 199I when another of Michael’s violent abuse victim called his probation officer. The probation officer “told Rose to get a restraining order” (Stillman, 2010). Rose Ryan sister mentioned to the probation officer that Michael had a gun in his possession, this led the probation officer to obtain a warrant for Michael Cartier’s arrest. This didn’t stop Michael from attacking rose with a pair of scissors. When Michael was finally picked up by…

Little Daquan was born two months premature and weighed three pounds six ounces, born with a heart murmur and slight difficulty breathing. When Crystal was faced with the caseworker from social services, she realized that she would only be dismissed from the hospital with little Daquan, if the caseworker was certain that her mother Florence’s apartment was suitable for living with the infant. By voluntarily placing him in foster care it would be easier for Crystal to get him back when she was mentally stable with a healthy environment. Little Daquan was placed with the Hargrove’s, a couple which lived in Long Island. Crystal began weekend visits to continue a relationship with little Daquan. Crystal had all intentions of getting little Daquan back once she was ready, although through her adolescence she became very destructive. In 1992, Crystal found an apartment, and got little Daquan back. At this point he was 8 years old. (Sheenan, 1993) I chose to focus my question around little Daquan, who was placed with foster parents, eventually lived with his father and his family, then…
