In Richard Rodriguez’s argument “Blaxicans and Other Reinvented Americans,” Rodriguez portrays the idea that according to him it is understandable to assimilate to a foreign culture.
This means that you can go out in the real world and say your are something you were not born with. For example, Rodriguez's statement “I answered that I am Chinese, and that is because I live in a Chinese city and because I want to be Chinese.”(163-165), serves the purpose that he began to acknowledge the lifestyle of a culture not his own. He does not quite speak of his Mexican culture, and it may come to conclusion that he does not want to follow his parents way of thinking, food topics, life style, dress code, and more that reflects back. He decides to change the rules because why not right? Going back to the idea of shaping America can be shown with Richard Rodriguez as he chooses to follow the Chinese culture and not the country’s nor his
culture.
Amy Tan’s essay “Mother Tongue” reflects on the idea that some people need to learn to adapt to a new culture in order to communicate with others and even get around the community. Amy Tan is a Chinese women born in America with a mother who has obtained a very poor English Language throughout the years after she fled China’s Communist revolution. Her mother speaks “broken English”, which is another way to identity the struggle of speaking English from the perspective of an immigrant. Tan states that “[She] had to get on the phone and say in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, ‘This is Mrs. Tan.’” (83-84), in order for her to receive her check for her work. She has to become her mother’s tongue when communicating with others because her english was not quite coherent. This reflects back to the main idea of shaping American culture in a way where immigrants have to learn the new ways of a culture in order comprehend another person.
The idea of choosing whether or not assimilating to another culture is one's own. Some use it to get around in a new country and others just happen to say they belong to a new culture just because they want to. There is always a positive and negative side to an idea like this. The positive side is that people shape American culture by struggling to learn its language. The negative side is that people have a variety of cultures to assimilate from making it hard to recognize one true American culture. Maybe American culture means to acknowledge a culture who you are proud of and identify your inner self with the most.
