darkness they would never have understood, and the majority of people during The Great
Depression faced this dreadful truth. The artist, Bob Kramer, compiled this piece of fine art after
being inspired by Dorothea Lange's black and white photographs during the great depression.
Mr. Kramer captures the essence of poverty in his artwork of a young girl sitting in a bleak room
which is filled with nothing more than a bed, bench, and a few old books which are stored on the
windowsill. When I see this work of art my mind is transported to a time of destitution. First of …show more content…
all, the historical context can be clearly recognized throughout the picture. For instance, the
picture depicted is based off of moments captured by photography during the Great Depression;
therefore, one can determine what life was like for the less fortunate at that time in history.
Also, the picture captures the image of poverty in the 1930's by showcasing the drab atmosphere
and the many hardships faced during this time; thus helping a viewer to understand how
impoverished people were suffering when the great depression hit.
Furthermore, the background
of the photograph leads to a sense of deficit. For example, the room is a grim sight to see, the
walls are a dull shade of brownish gray. The walls are crumbling down, and what looks like wall
paper above the empty fireplace is detaching from the wall. Another example, the lack of
anything resembling happiness or wealth clearly demonstrates that this dreary room is not a
pleasant place to live. There are no furnishings other than a bed and a small bench, which reminds me of a barren wasteland. The room is a clear portrayal of the life of disenfranchised
people. Lastly, one can observe the young girls body language. As a result, we can see her
posture depicting a situation in which she visually just wants to give in and have this pain finally
end. Her head rests on her hand, her frail body curled up like a withering flower. Her eyes are
drawn to an empty fireplace; her face is empty with no emotion, no passion, just a
vacuum
waiting to be filled. Also, her heavy eyes possess no glimmer of hope, nothing about the way she
sits displays any sign of contentment. She appears to be lost, blinded by the pain of poverty she
sits in the cold room wishing there was more to her life. This young girl is obviously a girl who
has suffered the blights of this unfortunate time in our history. After inspecting this piece of art, I
am reminded of the hardships our country faced during the 1930's, the poor living conditions had
a demoralizing impact on those who could not afford a decent place to live
