1. Summary
First, the part - one of the story tells about Blima. She is smart and known as the beat child. She works at bakery with aunt and she embarrassed about chest. Blima is guilty about her baby brother who was dropped by her and died at 6. Then it tells about Blima's vanity that she thinks she is not pretty like her sister, Adele, even though her mother says she looks most like herself. Lastly, the story tells about Grandfather's death and Blima's loosing shoes.
2. Historical background

Blima's Self-image
Blima thinks that she is not pretty like her sister, Adele.
In the book, she talked with her mother, and said" I'm not pretty, mama""Everyone notices Adele, the beauty queen."(page 21)
4. Quotations
(page 41) Blima's sister-in-law Ruschia said, ' "Well...look, Blima, I do not mean to frighten you, but you know how it's been lately. In the streets, in the stores, and now they look, make faces, and laugh even when we go into the synagogue. And that Hitler---well, you can read the papers for what he says about us. It is just...just hard for us now; that's all I mean." '
By Ruschia's talking with Blima, it shows that Hitler, the Anti-Semites, already start the movements which against the Jewish people. The Anti-Semites has already given the faces to the Jewish people no matter where they are. It's might be the preview of Blima's story later.
6. Two unfamiliar vocabulary words

prettier." gaze: Guessing: look, stare
Dictionary: to look steadily, intently, and with fixed attention.
(page 27) " They meet in dark clubs where they salute each other and vow allegiance to a noisy little man, a painter by trade, named Hitler. " allegiance Guessing: some kinds of promising words.
Dictionary: loyalty or the obligation of loyalty, as to a nation, sovereign, or cause.
