Live Theatre Evaluation: Blood Brothers

I went to see the production ‘Blood Brothers’ at Wycombe Swan Theatre on the 24th April 2013. Blood Brothers is a musical about twin brothers Mickey (Sean Jones) and Edward (Mark Hutchinson) separated at birth who both find each other again and become blood brothers, but find out they’re brothers right before they die. Before I saw the play, my expectations were it was going to be boring and just plain acting, which I do not like. I was quite surprised to find out it was a musical. I was quite looking forward to see how they used the script to make it happy, sad or funny at times. When I looked at part of the script in class, I didn’t really understand what was going on

    Intellectually I was affected because I felt like I had to focus a lot more on the play than the film because I was only going to see it once on preview night and then have to finish watching the movie to then have to write this comparative essay. Emotionally I found that both the actress of Christine Colgate in the play and Janet Colgate in the movie played their roles very well because I wasn’t able to predict that she was also a conmen until the very near end of the movie and the play.     Some character’s costumes had more emphasis than others, such as Grendel’s mother and the Dragon lady. Mostly, the main characters had on “normal” clothes; nothing fancy. The ensemble all had on black capes with hoods which helped signify them all as one and set a stronger mood to their chorus singing altogether. This also gave an eerie feeling to the play when the ensemble were out. Plus, they were there as narrators of the scenes. Basically, the play was a parallel to the original book “Beowulf”, except the characters were tweaked some and the storyline was different. The main character, Ross, has a “bro-mance” with his roommate who has to move out, so he quickly receives a random roommate from an ad online, named Beowulf (“Beo”) who starts hosting parties at their place all of the time, causing trouble with the cops. Meanwhile, Ross’s girlfriend, Cass, and he start having problems, she ends up taking an opportunity in London and everything goes downhill. At the same time, Beowulf threatens their neighbor Grendel and steals his laptop and other items, but he has to manage his way out of the consequences by making deals with a dragon lady and by hooking up with Grendel’s mother; persuading her to drop the charges. Of course, there is a happy ending which in turn made me happy. I think the production very suitable to this play because it fit the mood of the college scene and was very relatable. The actors and actresses were excellent. Throughout the production, the sound was projected in a good tone for the audience to pick up all of the words no matter where they were sitting. I was impressed with my fellow students’ singing and acting talents. Plus, the play was enjoyable for college students and anyone older. There was a humorous theme, and also about friendship. The directing was well-done and precise. I would like to see another show done by…

    Every musical needs two things script and music, the musical that I saw at the civic center “A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum.” It is witty characters and humorous songs made it a delight to see and you left with a smile. The music was the best out of the whole play. The orchestra was small having a piano, two violins, bass guitar, reed one and two, trumpet one and two, trombone, and percussion each instrument being a big part of production. The play starts with a song “comedy to night” giving a background in the streets of ancient Rome of three houses. The center of the house Senex who lives there with his wife Domina, son Hero, and the many slaves them owned. Hero has his own slave Pseudolus who is the main character and head slave Hysteria. One of the other neighbors is owned my Marcus Lycus, the house is a whorehouse. The other neighbor is Erronius who has been gone for many years trying to find his children who were abducted my pirates. Thing singer who plays Pseudolus tone was raspy, pitch high, two beats, and tempo allegro the music flowed well and pulling the audience in quickly with it being very humorous. I thought the texture was monophonic being only one person singing the song and form being AB. The song ends giving a summary of the whole play, and it goes on to the next song. Hero the son of Senex has fallen in love with a girl who he has never spoken too. He starts to sing “love, I hear” his tone was rich, pitch was high, dynamic was mezzo forte, the tempo of the song was allegro it was a lovely song that expressed his love for a girl he has never spoken to. The song had two beats with the texture of the music monophonic because it was only one person singing it. After he ends he tells his slave Pseudolus if you get me that girl. I will let you be free and Pseudolus is so shocked that he cannot believe it and starts to sing “free” his texture is very raspy, with tempo vivace, and dynamics Mezzo Piano. The pitch is high and form verse…

    Julia Fischer performed the Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor in Dresden. This performance was made on May 29, 2010 in Paris. Along with Fischer is the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE). Fischer is accompanied by the orchestra that served as her background in performing the music. The orchestra gave further depth on the emotions and power of the music played by Fischer. This proved that though Fischer is the main musician in this part of the concert, the greatness and power of her music remains incomplete or plain without the orchestra.
