Background
The pressure of blood in the circulatory system is, also known as blood pressure (BP) is “the force exerted on a vessel wall by contained blood. This is expressed in millimeters per mercury (mmHg)” (Marieb & Hoehn, 2016, pp. 708). There are two parts to blood pressure: systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. “Systolic pressure is the pressure exerted by blood on the vessel walls during ventricular contractions” (Marieb & Hoehn, 2016, pp.708). Conversely, “diastolic pressure is the blood pressure that is reached due to diastole (which is the resting …show more content…
Maintaining blood pressure can vary depending on three important factors: cardiac output (CO), stroke volume (SV) and peripheral resistance (PR). CO is referred to the amount of blood that is being pumped out of each ventricle within 1 minute (Marieb & Hoehn, 2016, pp. 688). CO is also the overall product of both heart rate and SV (Marieb & Hoehn, 2016, pp 688). Stroke volume (SV) refers to the volume of blood being pumped out of a single ventricle during one contraction of the heart valve(s). Finally, the term, “peripheral” refers to the systemic circulation, as it is the cause of most friction of blood within the vessels (Marieb & Hoehn, 2016, pp.708). Peripheral resistance in general is explained as the resistance of blood flow within the vessels. For example, as the vessels (arteries) dilate, resistance decreases. Conversely, as arteries constrict, the peripheral resistance …show more content…
Although the mean heart rate increased as the testing went on, the maximum heart rate decreased when spelling words forward, and decreased when spelling words backwards. Additionally, the minimum heart rate decreased overtime from 87 bpm (baseline) to 73 bpm (spelling backwards). Pulse pressure increased overtime from baseline of 19 mmHg to spelling backwards 25 mmHg. As you can see in the graph under “Cognitive Stressor” in the results section, spelling backwards for the subject became stressful for the subject as they had an increase in blood pressure and overall heart
