Boarding Stables

Boarding stables offer a great option for horse owners who do not have the room or facilities to board their horse on their own property. When choosing a stable, many things must be considered to ensure the safety and well-being of your horse.

Cost

The cost of boarding your horse can vary depending on the location of the stable and the services offered. Decide how much you can afford and how far you are willing to travel before you start looking at facilities. Check different locations that are within your chosen range, as some areas may be less expensive than others due to taxes, property costs and accessibility.

Special features such as indoor arenas, new barns, automatic feeders, blacksmiths, trails and larger stalls can increase boarding costs. Decide what features you need or are willing to pay for before you start looking. Most stables will charge the same rate whether you use these special amenities or not.
But keep in mind that self care generally includes stables and fencing. Horse owners will be required to feed, water, groom exercise and provide vet care, food and bedding for their animals.

Safety and Hygiene

Inspect all stalls, barns, and fences for potential hazards, such as loose boards, weak locks or latches, nails or screws that are sticking out, holes in floor boards, or broken windows. Fire extinguishers should be readily available, as well as a first aid kit for both the horses and the caregivers. It is a good idea for the boarding stable to have a regular vet, but horse owners should be able to choose their own as well.

The barn should have a fresh smell and be well-ventilated. Stalls should be free of clutter and extra equipment and have plenty of fresh, clean bedding. Inspect feed and water containers to make sure they are clean.
