Our identity is ever changing and can never be constant. Identity can be defined as personal and distinctive characteristics of any given individual. Actions in the past, present and the future will affect your identity but during those times, it’s the actions of yourself and others that defines who you are. Even when we are born, the canvas of identity is already being painted without your knowledge, in most cases we are born from the history of our parents; in addition to that we also inherited the social culture that has been pasted down from our ancestors.
While we do not choose the family or ethnicity we are born with, we can choose the connections we forge with other people. To those that we associate with, they play a major role in what kind of social environment and attitudes we are subjected to. Take teachers for example, at school they are a part of the education system and therefore they feel that they have a connection with the job. For example they got fired, what would they do? Do they get a new job? Do they change their field of work? If they do, do they still view themselves as teachers or ex-teachers? This presents the facts that changes in our past and present can change how we view ourselves. Even twins who are born with identical DNA’s, their personality will differ to each other due to being exposed to different groups and different environments. This proves that those who we associate ourselves with can influence us on how we develop our sense of self.
When there is conflict there is the inevitable fallout that can dislodge our sense of belonging. These conflicts are created by circumstances in which we find ourselves in. In Suneil Badami or “Neil” is affected by bullying as he was Indian. The constant bullying towards him, due to the actions of others, gave him the impression that being Indian is shameful. The constant
