From the start, Connie lives amongst clouds, and “the lines between perception, imagination...dream [and] nightmare...become hazy” (Birns, Margaret Boe 1), evidence shows that she “sleepwalks through life listening to music only she seems to hear” (Mann, Barry & Peck, David 1), seeking approval from others, and associating with those living simple-mindedly, all aspects working together creating her identity. The suburban, seemingly boring and out-of date town she resides further shapes her behavior and sense of identity. The passage portrays an environment denoting that the simplicity and unknowing individuals that grow up there are clueless to what occurs in the real world. The subarea cultural shapes Connie's thinking and actions, mannerisms and thoughts. Therefore, this detached view concerning the world gained her the attention of a sleazy man that stalked her until her most vulnerable point, until she was forced to comply to all he desired. This poses the debate whether the makeup, boys and music create Connie’s identity, or the small town, that formed a mindless young girl create her identity. This work displays aspects regarding identity that shapes many people and dictates their place in the world. For some, religion is their very being, people turn to this outlet to explain existence, creation, and the purpose of life. Religion is “home” (23), and like Ortiz’s “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,” shapes their mannerisms, thoughts, and lifestyles. The difference between religion and Connie’s shaping of identity, is regarding the source of direction. Muslims, Hindus. Christians, and Catholics look to preachers, books, and stories of old to present the proper path they should follow, whereas Connie looks to modern music, acquaintances, and her own nieve direction when considering how to live
