Since the beginning of society each person’s identity has been shaped over time. Our individual identity is ultimately determined by the way others think of us to a certain extent. Influences by our family and Peer-Pressure determine who we are but ultimately the final decision is made up by yourself and who you are as a person.
It could be said that influences by our family and Peer-Pressure can determine our individual identity. Possibly the 4,400 deaths a year are said to be brought upon by peer-pressure. Throughout the novel “Unpolished Gem” Alice’s family persist in making Alice choose an Asian Cambodian to have a relationship with, Alice growing up in Australia didn’t always want to marry a Cambodian and when she developed a relationship with Michael she had to lie to her Mother About her boyfriend and that he was upstairs she explained “We were vacuuming” revealing that she lied to her mother because she had not, agreed with the fact of being with an Australian which was not her mother’s ideal and was against the idea of having a relationship with someone with a contrasting ethnic background. Alice’s reveals to Michael and explains “That the truth, Michael, “I said,” would be worse than the lie”. This gives insight about her mother’s view towards others and her perception towards Alice and what she would deem to be acceptable. It can be argued that our family can determine your individual identity, but you as a person ultimately decide.
There could be a change in your individual identity through being stereotypes in society.
