Although there are people to contradict the claim that social media does not affect the views of adolescents on themselves and others, many writers, and psychologists argue that although social media may not be the only reason to the problem of body image dissatisfaction in adolescents, it is a contributor to the amount of adolescents dissatisfied with themselves.“Teenagers today face a growing discrepancy between their bodies and mediated role models” (Strasburger). The time in which adolescents are being exposed to puberty and the meaning of body image is important in order for them to be healthy. Body Image is described in many different ways “... a core of mental and physical well-being” (Helga Dittmar 1) , “...a multidimensional construct that represents how individuals think, feel, and behave with regard to their own physical attributes” (Igor Esnaola, Arantzazu Rodríguez, Alfredo Goñi), and as “...a merging of one’s outer appearance with perceptions derived from personal and cultural factors; body image is a “multidimensional construct that is influenced by biological, psychologic, and social factors.”(Strasburger 521) With these ideals of what body image is, it is shown that it is based on how one perceives themselves, with the contribution of their environment. As adolescents we have been revealed to the different ways society concerns itself with body image and how our minds are unprotected. “Body image in adolescence is constructed from several factors: individual, familial, peer, and cultural.” (Strasburger 541)

“Overt messages from parents encouraging their daughters to lose weight predict an increased drive for thinness and higher likelihood of body dissatisfaction” (strasburger)
“One study revealed that friends and family give messages to boys to increase musculature and to girls to encourage weight loss. However, messages to boys decrease over time, whereas those to girls increase”
The exclusion of an adolescent's healthy view on themselves comes greatly from their family. It’s obvious because of how constant adolescents are surrounded by either their friends or family.
