Persuasive Advertisement Analysis
Advertisements are meant to bring awareness to people, incite reactions and in many cases make us feel like we need something so that we will want it enough to buy it. They are used for a variety of things are seen on billboards and television, in magazines and newspapers, storefronts, the radio, etc. so they are a big part of our daily lives whether we notice them or not. The claim or evidence behind the advertisement is sometimes misplaced and represent the wrong things to our youth. In doing so images are represent the norm and cause children and young adults to feel as if they have to appear the way they see people in the advertisements. A big issue that has risen over the last few years have included the images of “skinny” models. These images, in many cases, show models that appear to be skeleton thin with bones protruding in their faces and on their bodies. Magazine covers often show celebrities and models who are size 0 or 2 and leave behind an impression that in order to be a model, celebrity, or even beautiful that you have to be the size of the models in the advertisements. Over the years there has been stories published about what a model had to do in order to be the size that the designers wanted them to be and sometimes this led to anorexia, bulimia, and drug use in order to stay the size that they …show more content…
The issue lies with the negative effects on our youth when idealizing a body image that is unhealthy or at the very least non-existent. So, what do we do? That is a very hard question to answer and I can’t answer that for you. But, what I can do is inform you of the negative consequences of the images that our youth see on a daily basis. This paper was to argue the influences of negative body images and how advertisers are feeding our youth idealized body images and ruining our youth with untrue

    A study showed that women experience an average of 13 negative thoughts about their body each day, while 97% of women admit to having at least one “I hate my body” moment each day (raderprograms). Teens today are faced with many pressures: how they dress, who their friends are, who they are going to date, and most importantly, what they look like. In today’s society, body image is more than just the mental picture a person has of what their body looks like. For many, body image is also a reflection of how they feel about themselves and their lives. People with a negative body image believe that if they do not look right, other things, such as their personality, intelligence, social skills, or capabilities, also are not right. They think that if they fix their bodies, all their other problems will disappear. This can result in unhealthy weight management practices and an unhealthy relationship with food. People excessively diet and exercise out of fear of gaining weight. The media today portrays stick thin women with beautiful faces and size 0 bodies, but the truth is, the majority of runway models meet the Body Mass Index (BMI) criteria to be considered anorexic (raderprograms).     Claiming that all young women that become paid models suffer from eating disorders is a stereotype that society develops a common misconception of. Paid models can be seen on the runways, on television, and even walking the streets. When designers dress these models in minimal clothing, their body structure becomes exposed for all to look at and judge.     While it’s fashion week in London, the size “zero” models start to prepare for the big show by purging to be as thin as possible. Most models starve themselves in order to achieve the “waif”, stick-thin figure; it becomes so addictive, almost like second nature that it further leads to serious eating disorders. From recent studies, today’s model weighs about 23% less than the normal woman. Clearly, most models do not depict the average woman. Men and women all over the world follow the influences that the fashion industry provides. They believe that the fashion industry depicts on what society should be acknowledged as, picture-perfect thin. Most models look like they had descended from heaven, but in reality they live in a sad world where body image is what is considered beautiful and they would do just about anything to achieve it. Society is also taking a nose dive into this self-deprecating environment, where it is definitely not healthy for a person to develop and thrive. As Naomi Hooke, anorexia survivor, acknowledges, “Anorexia has often been perceived as a quest for model-like beauty . . . many anorexics detest their bodies,” she then further goes into detail how this industry became her downfall (3). These waifish models on the runway cause major damage in the well-being of many, as well as their own; they create body image complexes that haunt women forever. Yes, the fashion industry is well known for the classic thin models, although in the 1950’s models symbolized the beauty of the average woman, full figured and all, but today’s models should not depict to an individual on what they should be perceived to look like, yet it happens every day.…

    Models over the past decades have become noticeably thinner and thinner creating an ongoing debate: Are models becoming too thin? For a recent example, Bethaney Wallace, a teenage model, dies at the age of 19 from starving herself to death, all for the sole purpose of selling clothes. Model deaths are one of the many reasons that have caused the fashion industry to discuss implementation of a minimum model weight standard. This issue has been in debate for a long time now, but standards have never been enacted. Most people would do anything for a job they loved, including purging, starving, and excessive exercising.     When you look in the mirror what do you see? In America, ones self-perception, but more of the perceptions of others establish body image. The media plays a huge role on how a teen feels about their outer appearance. For most girls, being healthy means having the perfect body and being accepted by their peers. The American Academy of Pediatrics showed that the majority of girls, 59 percent, reported resentment with their body shape, and 66 percent expressed the desire to lose weight (Image).
