Boiling and Quick Sip
Sarah woke up early, the sun pouring through the apartment window; she stretched lazily and placed her feet, one by one on the floor. Rising from the bed, she tiptoed through the boxes which lay everywhere and put a kettle of water onto boil. Waiting, she glanced over all her possessions, grateful she had the whole day before her. She scooped instant coffee into the cup and poured in now boiling water. Stirring the coffee, she tried to decide where to begin. She took a quick sip of coffee and searched her box of books. She ordered them neatly on a shelf. Then, she lifted her suitcase onto her bed. She unlatched the clasps and opened it and hung her dresses, carefully, in the closet. Then she put the rest of her clothes in her cast of drawers. In the last box she found the dishes her mother had given her. She washed them thoroughly, dried them all and laid them carefully in the cupboard. And she closed the cupboard door; she sighed and looked at the calendar. Tomorrow her roommate would come, but for now, Sarah had a home of her own.

Peter slammed his office door and ruptured another splinter on its face like the thousands that plagued it. His shaky hands fixed three locks across the door that jarred into their familiar cradles. He dragged his chair through the cracked grooves in the floorboards and collapsed into it with a sigh. The paperwork on his desk was minimal. It was the nightmare garden he tended to every night once the children were dreaming, and his wife curled against her own skin, embraced by icy cotton sheets. Judy just wanted some sugar for her coffee. She flitted back and forth between cabinets and drawers, leaving them open as she went along busily searching for that sugar. “Where could it have possibly gone?” she half mumbled to herself, “I just used it the other day.” As she reached behind the box of cornstarch, the honey container tipped over and started oozing onto the counter that was already cluttered with piles of unopened mail, a plate with a half eaten, moldy sandwich, and a variety of orange and white medicine bottles. Distracted by the sound of the door bell ringing, Judy went to answer the door. Her daughter flew in, irritation in her voice, “Mom. Aren’t you ready yet? I’ve been calling you.”…

Rachel stared into the blur of trees passing the bus window. The woods were getting deeper and thicker as the bus moved north, away from her empty home and the pregnant graves of her mother, father and son. She looked up into the sky and thought about the faith she also orphaned there, a faith she had since birth, a faith she had painstakingly force-fit into every moment of her life for thirty years. But it had proven to be like the rest of her relationships, one where she was always expected to give and never to receive. It was her time to receive, so it had to be left behind. She leaned over and reached into her brown purse, which sat on the floorboard tucked between her feet. She exhumed from it her worn little journal and her pencil and…

Jonas was startled at first. He had awoken to find himself in a bed. The room was warm and he felt a feeling of comfort. He was wrapped in a warm blanket, and he was wearing new clothes. Beside him was a small table with a glass of water on it. He looked around. Gabriel was not in the room. On the wall was a window and he saw that it was light outside. My anxiety flutted around in my chest and gripped each breath like a vice. The daunting and steep steps danced in my mind making the simple task of walking up stairs more difficult than the impossible task to run a mile in a minute. Next, a boy pushed the door open behind him almost as an afterthought, but in my chaotic mind it was the best thing all morning to happen. On the dreadful first day of school, chivalry was not dead, or at least that’s how I was able to comprehend his actions. I glanced around unsurely before starting to slowly walk towards the freshman commons; each eye that meets mine screamed enthusiasm.…

At one-thirty in the afternoon, Carolee Mitchell was running the vacuum cleaner, or she would have heard the first sirens and looked out. After the first, there weren’t any others. The calling voices, even the number of dogs barking, could have been students on their way back to school, high-spirited in the bright, cold earliness of the year. Thinking back on the sounds, Carolee remembered a number of car doors being slammed, that swallow of air and report which made her smooth her hair automatically even if she wasn’t expecting anyone. But what caught her eye finally was what…

She thanks the instructor and walks to the advisement center to register for classes. As she waits to be called she feels her stomach growling. She barely noticed her hunger. She started imaging those tender, juicy chicken strips from Whataburger, with the salty fried fries, and the soft moist Texas toast with a nice cold Sprite. “Karla,” she snaps out of her world of food as soon as she hears her name and walks to the advisor’s office. The small office faintly smelled like the cologne her ex-boyfriend uses. She sat on a rough chair while the advisor registered her. After waiting a while, the advisor hands her a paper with the classes she’ll take and what time they start at. She walks out of the office feeling tired yet accomplished. She walks to the parking area where her family was waiting for her. She informs them that she was officially a college student and that she was very hungry. In the middle of the night, I woke up sweating and gasping for air I squirmed under my sheets as if they were large white hands, intent of choking me in my sleep. Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm myself down. I spent the rest of the night exhausted, but not willing to slip back into sleep. Finally, the sun rose from beyond the rolling green hills on the horizon. I rapidly got dressed and tried to smooth down my rumpled plain gray clothes. Every girl or woman on the whole Island of Alphaya, my home island, owned the same clothing. I hurried down the narrow hallway, the floorboards creaking with every step. I approached the dining table. Thea, my older sister, was sitting across from me, slowly eating a bowl of plain, watery oatmeal. Her…

The night before I left my home to start school at Kutztown, I cried. I slept next to my mom in her room, surrounded by stuffed animals around my body from my youth, tears streaming down my face. I was scared, nervous, and uncertain about my future. The idea of going to this new place, with new faces, and new beginnings excited me, but choked me at the time. I didn’t know what to think. My anxiety was at an all time high. The first night at Kutztown, I laid in my bed staring at the concrete, white walls, next to a girl I hadn’t known more than a couple months, wondering if this was it. I had spent most of the day unpacking what seemed to be a hundred boxes, transforming a bare dorm into my home for then next year. Cassie and I quickly grew into friends.…
