Bollywood
Bollywood in short, is the name for the film industry in Mumbai or formerly Bombay. It is considered to be the largest as far as films produced and tickets sold. They call Bollywood the movie capital of the world. 14 million Indians go to movies daily and there are more then 250 movie theatres in Mumbai alone according to an article called Bollywood, India’s movie industry known as Bollywood, by Matt Rosenberg.
Bollywood films are very much a theatrical production a lot like a musical that you would see in a Broadway production. These films are usually very lengthy ranging from 3-6 hours with an intermission. The concept captures a wide range of ideas that try to touch on many aspects of life as well as situations as Indians want full value for their money. They call these films Masala’s that is translated to a mixture of spices, meaning these films are a mixture of song, dance, comedy, love, and action. Song and dance is of the most importance in Bollywood films as they can make or break its outcome. The musical directors in these films are highly valued commodities and are well known in the film community almost like actors. The dancing more of less modeled after Indian style of dancing but may also include classical dance styles, folk dance, and a blend of western style dancing. The songs and lyrics are usually that of love and not much else. I have found that India has a large number and uses of other languages. The dialogue in these films is usually Hindi but I found that in the film Rab Ne Bana di Jodi you see a blend of Hindi mixed with the English language. I imagine this being the case because English is usually a second language and used worldwide.
I enjoy watching foreign but even more so finding out the background on such. I uncovered that illegitimate gangsters and local mafias financed a large number of films made in India. This was done for a number of reasons but most importantly because Indian banks were forbidden to finance

The definition of “Bollywood” described by Gopal and Moorti, “Frequently remarked upon by insiders and always remarkable to outsiders, song-dance occupies the constitutive limit of Bollywood cinema.
