Bonnie & Clyde
Many have heard of Bonnie & Clyde, but very few people know the real story, and who they really were. Bonnie & Clyde were complete opposites before their ill-fated encounter, but they took the world by storm and won the hearts of many, with their tumultuous love story. The fact that these star crossed lovers went down in a “blaze of glory” keeps their names remaining in history books as well as pop culture.
Bonnie Elizabeth Parker was born on October 1, 1910 in Rowena, Texas. Her father Charles passed away unexpectedly when she was the age of four, after her father’s death her mother, Emma moved Bonnie to Cement City, TX to live with her parents. Bonnie excelled in high school and was awarded top prizes for spelling, writing, and public speaking. At school Bonnie met Roy Thornton and married him six day before her sixteenth birthday. After her marriage Bonnie went to work as a waitress in Dallas. Her marriage was marked with a lot of turbulence and in 1929; Roy was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. After Roy’s arrest Bonnie moved in with her mother and continued working as a waitress in Dallas.
Clyde Chestnut Barrow was born on March 24, 1909 in Ellis County. He was number five of seven children, his poor farming family had. In the early 1920’s Barrow’s family decided to move to West Dallas in search of a better life. There Clyde got his first brush in with the law when he failed to return a rental car on time. After that incident he started stealing goods, cracking safes, robbing stores, and stealing cars.
The very first meeting for these lovers came in January of 1930 at a mutual friend’s house. Bonnie had lost her job as a waitress and was helping to care for a friend in West Dallas. When they met the two were immediately attracted to each other. Bonnie & Clyde frequently saw each other until Clyde’s arrest in April of 1930.
