- To Kill a Mockingbird With this quote, Lee is trying to convey the idea that you can’t understand someone because you can’t always see through their point of view. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem talks about Boo Radley, stating, “There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time” (Lee 16). Scout and Jem judge who Boo Radley based off of rumors. They never really get to understand who he is as a person. People perceive things differently and view situations around them with different sorts of mindsets, so ultimately, someone’s perception of something might be different from someone else’s.

“ “ But sometimes the Bible in the hand of …show more content…
one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of - oh, of your father.” ” (Lee 60).
- To Kill a Mockingbird This quote means that the impact an item or idea has on the world depends on the person behind it. For instance, Atticus was chosen by the judge to handle the evidence in the defense of Tom Robinson because he knew that Atticus was a man who strived to understand people. In fact, Miss. Maudie reveals to Jem and Scout, “Did it ever strike you that Judge Taylor naming Atticus to defend that boy was no accident? That Judge Taylor might have had his reasons for naming him” (Lee 289). Therefore, Lee is saying that because Atticus was a man who looked at the bigger picture, placing him as the defender of Tom Robinson was a powerful choice.

“Atticus told me to delete the adjectives and I'd have the facts” (Lee 79).
- To Kill a Mockingbird Adjectives are words that modify or describe nouns or pronouns. Unfortunately, these words can lead to pre assumptions or bias opinions on facts and ideas. By deleting the adjectives, you eliminate any sort of slant on something. Most of the white people in Maycomb held biased beliefs against the black community, and this racism transcended into everyday life, especially during the trial.
Before the jury was to vote, Atticus highlights, “She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man” (Lee 272). The use of biased words and perceptions distorted the truth of what really happened because such words could mean a positive or negative slant for one side or another.

““Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”” (Lee 119).
- To Kill a Mockingbird This piece of dialogue expresses how like mockingbirds, there are innocent people who are ostracized and hated. Mockingbirds have been known to be killed on accident because their calls are
misinterpreted. This can also be compared to many of the innocent characters in To Kill a Mockingbird that face evil. When Boo asks Scout to take him home, she notices that “He almost whispered it, in the voice of a child afraid of the dark” (Lee 372). Boo’s innocence is tainted through how the people of Maycomb ostracize him. However, the quote exposes his fragile and child-like personality. He isn’t the person that they think he is, and thus, he is a victim of the injustice and hatred that happens in the story.

“People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for” (Lee 232).
- To Kill a Mockingbird Lee states this to emphasize how people often want to be justified in their beliefs. They need a sense of self-satisfaction and don’t want to be proven wrong. Thus, they block out things that may matter. After the verdict is announced, Atticus tells Jem, “I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it - seems that only children weep” (Lee 285). This reveals that people have had a history of voting against black people in court. Combined with the racism present in Maycomb and throughout most of the novel, it is most likely that the jury believed in the fact that Tom was guilty and only looked for the evidence that justified their beliefs.

“We are to be judged not on the things we say or do, but on the things we have said and done.”
- My Dad This quote means that people are judged not by what they do in the present, but what they do in the past. Judgement evolves according to what people look back on. For example, most people will not immediately judge you for a decision that you make until they see the effects of that decision.

“If you are kicked from behind, that means that you are in front.”
- My Dad This quote shows that everything has a cause and an effect. In addition, this also implies that many problems can be rationally explained and simple in nature. Honestly, my dad believes that it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon (or scientist) to solve most problems. This quote is straightforward and funny, just like how my dad views life and the predicaments that come with it.

“Just because you’re trash, doesn’t mean you can’t do great things. It’s called garbage can, not garbage cannot.”
- A friend This quote actually means that no matter what a person may be, they can still aspire to be better. Basically, nothing can hold someone back. Even if they are given a poor uprising or that they feel down, they can still strive to do whatever, go anywhere, and become anything they want to. In my friend’s eyes, he feels that there is no limit to someone’s potential.

“Simplicity is the best beauty.”
- My Mom In her own words, my mom was trying to express how beauty does not need to be extravagant nor complex. The greatest beauty often comes from who you are, not from what you add to make yourself beautiful. While makeup and other cosmetic additions may make a person appear better, they distract from what true beauty is.

“In the modern school system, people obsess over arbitrary numbers more than actually learning. Higher numbers don’t always mean that you’re learning the stuff.”
- A Friend With his quote, my friend meant to tell others that school in the modern age has created the idea of achieving better grades, not on how much people learn. By this, he is implying that getting to truly know the material is what really matters and that grades can be irrelevant if you do not learn at all. This is especially true in jobs and the real world.

“Don’t panic” (Adams).
- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy With these two words, Adams says that this piece of advice is something that can improve one’s life a lot. That was why he put it in his novel. Similarly, by not panicking in a bad situation, Adams is implying that it is easier for anyone in the long run. Panicking can make people lose sight of the real solutions. It can also make people become distracted or angry for no reason.

“ "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends” ” (Tolkien).
- Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring Through his writing, Tolkien shows that it is important not to jump to conclusions and judge others for what they seem to be. Nobody knows everything and thus nobody is justified in stating what one deserves. A lot of times, there are certain circumstances that obscure the real truth behind a situation.

“Life is like a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
- Forrest, Forrest Gump This popular quote means that what happens can often be unexpected. Likewise, by comparing it to chocolates, it also implies that you might experience good and bad events. This ties in with the idea of expecting the unexpected, as like Forrest said, you never know what might happen.
“ "What day is it?" "It's today", squeaked Piglet. "My favorite day", said Pooh.” ” (A.A. Milne).
- Piglet and Pooh, Winnie the Pooh Through this conversation, A.A. Milne is implying that today is a day that matters more than other days. While you can remember the past and look forward to the future, Milne is stating that today should be our favorite day because it’s when we get to not only experience the world, but define tomorrow.

“Do or do not, there is no try.”
- Yoda, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back Through this quote, Yoda is expressing the idea that trying is similar to a negative attitude. In Yoda’s eyes, trying is implying that you might not succeed. By doing something, it appears like you are putting in effort and believe that you will succeed. All in all, Yoda’s mindset indicates that it is essential to have a positive mindset in any situation.
“Calm down. Everything’s going to be alright.”
- Me I have used this quote a lot of times in my life, so it can apply to basically anyone. Essentially, this quote means that it is not good to worry about everything in life and that going in with a cool head in any situation can help.

“Don’t just let your dreams be about the impossible. Make them possible.”
- Me With this quote, I am trying to say that if you longingly dream of something, no matter how impossible it may be, you should make your dreams a reality.
“It doesn’t matter where we come from or where we go. It’s the journey that counts.”
- Me This quote means that you should cherish and value your experiences. While the past and present do impact our lives, it’s the present that we truly care about. Experiences define life, and it won’t matter how your life begins or ends if you enjoy the world for what it is.
Page 15
“It’s not that complicated. Don’t make it be.”
- Me This quote basically means don’t complicate things. In my eyes, simplicity is a virtue. People worry too much these days, and calming down can really alleviate any pressure and stress on one’s mind.
“Look not what you have to do, but what awaits you. That’s motivation in a nutshell.”
- Me With this, I am saying that motivation comes from a desire to reach a goal. So while the work may be hard, it is important to yearn for the finish line. Motivation can only come when you have dedication and determination in a task.
