How the Great Gatsby is Relevant to our Present Minds The Great Gatsby, written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, explores a world much like our own to this present day. The book was published in 1925, and it relates to several events that transpired back around the Roaring 20's. In addition, the book also correlates to today’s current events with the ideas such as: materialism, celebrity status, persona, and social networking. The historical significance of the Jazz Age was the generation where new music and fashion affected people in America. “Aloof, hard-edged, passionate and distinctly urban, the jazz musician character appealed to many young white girls and boys hoping to escape the drudgery of rural America” (The jazz age, no date). Without a doubt, most people were trying to live in an entertained world by drinking and partying; however the proper middle states neglected these people so called, “flappers.” Surprisingly, a lot of women really tried to become a flapper because “Jazz was not only a musical style, it was a style” (The jazz age, no date). Women like Zelda Sayre, who was Fitzgerald’s young soul mate, started a little development called “The New Women” and they wanted to prove that they could by as entertaining as the men like staying up all night getting loose (The jazz age, no date). Today, we are known for having multiple names for our generation. Some call us the Technology Age and others call us the Digital Age. With many more trends to be known by, we are living in a world where social media and technology define most of the aspects of people’s lives. Technology is huge in the fact that people can not leave their houses without their iPhones, Bluetooth, computers, car keys, etc. Similarly, individuals during the Jazz Age could not leave the house without their stylish fashion and mindset to party. Society calls each of these periods in time some sort of age, for they describe how that time period transpired. These moments in history that result in memories that humans are able to cherish or loathe. They are episodes of life that prove where the world has come.
