started to force herself to vomit. Another reason that the book shows a sympathetic protagonist is when Suzy talks about being an escort. You would never expect an Olympian runner to become a highly-paid escort. It makes the reader feel sorry for Suzy and hope she gets better because being an escort is frowned upon. Lastly, Suzy makes you feel upset about her story because she states “Hopefully my story will help other new mothers to get the help they need sooner, without the dangers of misdiagnosis and mistreatment” (Suzy111). Suzy emprises people to get help and sets them on a path too good well still battling herself. (233) Another reason I think this is a good book is because I can relate to it. When I first picked up this book I was not sure if I would like it because it is about sports and I can tell you I am not athletic. Anyways I saw that it talked about the true hard battle of being bipolar and I was hooked. I was diagnosed as a bipolar myself. It is scary and not all people experience the same extremes. In the book, she talks as if her bipolar was a monster that ruled of her, but made her feel good all over. One of her biggest downfalls with being bipolar was escorting. People would pay to have sex with her. They would also buy her gifts and take her places. She had a high for this type of behavior. Lastly Suzy would get attached to objects or people. Once Suzy became a mom she clung to her baby all the time. She would spend days just holding her child. “One day went Kylie went down for her morning nap, I set her in her bassinet a went into the kitchen to make myself some food, and I started to cry. All I wanted to do was to hold my precious little girl, who needed me, and I went back into her room and picked her up, rocking her in my arms on the couch for the rest of the day” (Suzy103). As a reader, you can see she clung to her precious baby. This sort of behavior is not liked by most doctors. Its seen as an unhealthy attachment. Therefore, I understand this because I myself have clung to people or objects and I am not 100% sure why. (292) Lastly this book has great plot twists that make it a good book. To start off with, once Suzy was 18 she was approached by a calendar crew who wanted her to shoot a swim suit year book. She did it right off the bat no questions asked. Another example of the plot twists was with she went the Olympics 3 times and lost every race. Never winning gold. Throughout the years, Suzy was always favored to win people were watching her from day one. Another plot twist was Suzy becoming an escort after having a threesome with her husband and an escort. She started to have regulars and move to Las Vegas because of that job. Eventually the biggest plot twist of all happens, a man comes ups to Suzy and asks “hello My name is William Bastones can I talk to you” (William Bastones 274). This man ends up being a reporter for an online site called The Smoking Gun. He exposes Suzy’s secret life of being an escort to the world. Once the story broke Suzy stayed home and eventually got diagnosed as bipolar which’d cleared up some of her behaviors. She has been fighting hard her whole life with bipolar to face the scary thought that she was bipolar herself. (214) To end off I loved reading this book.
The book Fast Girl left me thinking about myself, her life, and speechless from the plot twists. It is scary to think that this is a true story. Anyone can relate to feeling down and hopeless, but does everyone get that bad with their depression? Also, this book helped me see the light a little. I realized I really did need help and I am working through this battle trying to get better, but I promise you I am not alone. Lastly this book left me on the edge of every page. I just wanted to keep reading this because of all the plot twists and drama. Over all this book was outstanding it’s by far my favorite book I have read and that saying something.
