The main characters in Jane Yolen’s “Suzy and Leah” are Suzy, an American who doesn’t realize how hard the Jews have it, and Leah, a Jew who moves to the United States to escape the Nazis. At the beginning of the article, Suzy believes that Jews are like animals. Leah sees Suzy trying to “help” the Jews by giving them food, but Leah believes that Suzy has a false smile As they get to know each other more, their opinions start to change. Until her mom explained it to her, Suzy never realized all that Leah and other Jews had to go through. Eventually, Suzy and Leah become good friends.
Until the end of the article, Suzy and Leah have negative feelings towards each other. Suzy compares the Jews to zoo animals and thinks that Leah
is creepy. Leah states the Suzy has a false smile, and dislikes her because she laughed at her friend. Suzy thinks that Leah is “as prickly as a porcupine,” and starts to write about her as “Miss Porcupine.” Leah receives one of Suzy’s old dresses, and Suzy doesn’t approve. “I wish she would wear another dress.” Leah also wishes she had another dress, but Suzy’s dress is the only one she has. After a while, Suzy ends up in the hospital and has to have her appendix taken out. Suzy reads Leah’s diary and becomes very confused. She surreptitiously asked her mom about what it meant. Her mom explains what the Jews went through, and Suzy feels horrible. She goes to the hospital and tells Leah that she read her diary. Suzy gives Leah her own diary and insists that she reads it. They become friends since they now understand each other.
This change in feelings between Suzy and Leah changes the work as a whole in a couple of different ways. When Suzy and Leah become friends, the whole mood of the story changes. In the beginning, the mood is competitive. At the end of the story, the mood is happy and uplifting. The character’s feelings also affect the way they write in their diaries. At the beginning of the article, both characters are very judgemental. Towards the middle of the article, they are still judgemental, but they are also somber when Leah ends up it the hospital. At the end of the article, they are both happy and glad that they understand each other.
Suzy and Leah despised each other, they didn’t understand each other, and that prevented them from being friends. Suzy and Leah switched diaries and saw each other’s perspectives, they realized how the other person felt, and then they became friends. By seeing from another person’s point of view, they each made a new friend.
