Dear AP English Language and Composition Student:
This summer you are challenged to read and annotate the assigned essays thoroughly then prepare a dialectic journal/graphic organizer for each essay.
“The Fine Art of Baloney Detection” by Carl Sagan.
“Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell.
Dialectic Journal/Graphic Organizer –
A way to organize your thoughts about a specific text is to use a graphic organizer. Breaking the text into small sections helps you notice the details in writing: specific word and sentence choices. You may decide how to divide the text. Use the paragraph division in the text as natural breaking points, or perhaps consider smaller sections that reveal interesting stylistic choices. Although the graphic organizer takes time to complete, it lets you gather a great deal of information to analyze as you prepare to write an essay. The model graphic organizer asks you to select the text, restate it in your own words; next you analyze how the writer makes the point and what the effect on the reader is. Note that you become increasingly analytical as you move across the columns to the right. Annotated essays and dialectic journals are due on the first day of instruction. Journals are not to exceed eight pages.
We have provided an example for you “Los Angeles Notebook” (in part) by Joan Didion.
