The Partnership
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) founded in 1910 and chartered by Congress in 1916, is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States with more than 2 million youth and 900 thousand adult volunteers. BSA’s goal is to “train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and, at older age levels, career-oriented programs in partnership with community organizations.”

The BSA’s goal is in line with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s (APA) stated mission to “develop leaders, promote

In 2015, the two leadership development-focused organizations renewed their partnership by updating their longstanding Memorandum of Understanding. The MOU was signed by Mr. Wayne Brock (Chief Scout Executive, BSA) and Bro. Mark Tillman (34th General President, APA).

The Purpose
APA’s Boy Scouts Committee serves as the link between these two great organizations, specifically:

• Participate in BSA local communities’ unity awareness events and activities – work aggressively to relieve the plight of America’s underserved youth; and
• Partner with BSA in the development of programs designed to promote outdoor leadership, educational pursuits, and life skills development – provide positive life experiences for both youth and adults alike.

The Aims

• Many members of scholarship boards, college admissions boards, employee hiring panels, etc. are familiar with the experiences and skill sets acquired during the Eagle Scout process; and
• Advanced promotion for those joining the armed forces.

My chapter of Alpha Phi Omega is Alpha Beta Zeta, located at Radford University. Each member is required to get 35 community service hours each semester. Service projects occur around the New River Valley and help a variety of community organizations. Because Alpha Phi Omega has a partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, we host many projects that allow us to help them facilitate big events. Projects I have worked on include: cleaning a local daycare center, performing trail maintenance along a portion of the Appalachian Trail, collecting food for Meals on Wheels, raising money for different causes, running youth programs for Boy Scouts and 4-H events, cleaning our Adopt-A-Spot, beautifying local parks, and many other programs. The four pillars of the National Honor Society; scholarship, leadership, character, and service are the four qualities of a well-rounded individual. They have not only embodied who I strive to be, but have helped me achieve success and impact throughout my local community and my time as a national honor society member. Scholarship has helped me define not only who I am as a student, but has helped me prepare for my future. Without my drive to maintain my academics and pursue knowledge, I would not have discovered my love and passion for teaching. This newly discovered passion has helped me narrow down my future career, special education. Service, has helped me develop one of my individual characteristics, as I now understand the importance…

The National Honors Society is more than just a honor roll, but an organization that recognizes the efforts made by hard working high school students. I would like to join National Honors Society because it would challenge my development in both my community and my school. The National Honors Society, consisting of over one million students, would make me a part of a large community that could create many opportunities for me in the future. A highly respected organization such as the National Honors Society is very significant to me. The scholarships and programs offered by this organization helps increase my ability to get the education that I desire that I might not have been able to receive due to the rapidly rising costs of college.
