Sam, my brother, came home from a soccer team dinner, and he seemed slightly scared. He left the dinner early for fear of what might happen, and he turned out correct. We found out the next day that another team member ended up with forcibly bleached hair, even though he told them numerous times that his mother would not like it or approve of it. Experiences like this caused me to wonder what exactly hazing could be and why this seemed acceptable. Recently, I searched on the internet for the definition of hazing and found several different definitions that said the same meaning; basically, any task that someone must complete to be accepted into a group that requires physical or mental stress, even if they consent to the ritual. Activities like these can range from being forced to perform acts of vandalism to beatings by other members of the team or club. Found dead on February second, Penn State student Timothy Piazza died from a cracked skull and ruptured spleen. Originally ruled an accident, court systems thought that he simply drank too much, and died from alcohol poisoning. I found out that hazing is any act or ritual that requires someone to be degraded, injured, or humiliated to be part of a club or group. I learned that hazing is not strictly one type of abuse; it can come in various forms, including rape, battery, forced criminal acts, and other acts a person might not undertake on their own. I also found that no matter if the person consented to the hazing or not, charges can still be filed against the people who hazed them; this is a necessary rule, since it protects those who walk into it blindly.
