For entertainment, humans often draw themselves to movies about huge robots looming over the whole city, trampling over skyscrapers and squashing puny humans underneath their cold, metal feet. Movies like this depict artificial intelligence to be “the end of the world.” While this someday towards the future might be true, robots do help us with some activities throughout the day. On the other hand, these robots do have many downsides to them. Ray Bradbury captures these downsides in the story August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains. Written in 1950, a robotic house completes daily chores without the help of humans. With the absence of the humans, the house can not fight its own battles. To put it differently, robots do not have …show more content…
Difficult jobs are performed by robots daily, in place of a human doing the work and risking their life. According to Web Design Schools Guide, “Robots also make car manufacturing safer because they can take on dangerous and difficult jobs in place of humans” (10 Things We Couldn’t Do Without Robots). Involving lifting heavy metal and huge parts, car manufacturing is a job no normal human could easily do. With robots, the heavy lifting is done with ease. In addition to making jobs easier and safer, robots also help us learn. New research suggests that, “Robots can provide an interactive means of teaching kids about math in context by taking the numbers off of the page and into real life” (What Robotics Can Teach Kids). Children that have grown up with technology are used to tablets, Smart Boards, and iPhones. New websites like ABC Mouse.com have made learning easier and more fun for kids by involving colors, sounds, and games, all while involving necessary learning skills. Adults and kids who use technology and artificial intelligence everyday may believe that these factors make their lives easier. While this may be true, robots still cannot perform the activities that humans can do …show more content…
In 2015 a movie called, Chappie was released. Chappie is a movie about a robot police force, who help guard the city and make it safe for citizens. When Benton Moore, a former soldier shuts down the entire robot police force by shutting off the system, which turns the city into a pit full of riots, fires, and shoplifting. Without the help from backup police the city erupts into chaos. Since the robots can be controlled through computers, they can easily be turned off and even shut down completely. On the other hand, humans can not be controlled by technology. If there was human police in Chappie the riots would not have started and police could have kept doing their jobs. Not only are robots unreliable, but so are self driving cars. The article Self-Driving Cars Need to be More Reliable expresses how one of the main problems with self-driving cars is reliability. Self-driving cars are growing increasingly intelligent in ideal conditions, but still lack the ability to manage difficult conditions. Robots may be able to drive a car, but can they drive in difficult weather or detect crashes? Humans can cope with different weather situations in almost an instant. Robots have to be coded and reworked just to get an idea of how to handle a possible weather change, which could take years of research. “We sometimes expect intelligent robots to just “figure it all out,” but we already know that intelligent humans
