IE Business School

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Bert Clark, vice-‐president and general manager of Brannigan Food Soup’s Division, has to decide which of the four alternative plans his team members have proposed should be implemented in order to reverse the industry’s steady decline as well as the division’s sales, market share, and profitability decrease for the last three years. He has to move the division’s growth back to a 3-‐4% at the end of the fiscal year.

ANALYSIS OF THE SITUATION

Company: Brannigan is a company that has been operating for over 100 years. It has a Soup Division which has experienced a decrease in its profitability and needs to create a new strategy to stop the declining sales and market share it has been experiencing. It is important to highlight that the soup division is the cash cow (according to the Boston Consulting Group product matrix) of Brannigan Foods, reaching up to 40% of the company’s total sales.

Founded in 1907 in Brenham, Texas, the Brenham Creamery Company originated as, and continues to be, a family owned business. It initially specialized in the making of butter. In order to produce this good, excess cream possessed by surrounding farmers was purchased. A few years later, the Brenham Creamery Company began making and selling ice cream. This action soon proved to be very satisfactory as it began generating profits for the company. However, it was not until 1930 that the company officially changed its name to Blue Bell Creameries. Blue Bell has successfully infiltrated its respective market. Although their ice cream can be found throughout only 20 states in the nation, it is the third best-selling ice cream in the United States, following Breyers and Edy’s/Dreyer’s (Funding Universe). Blue Bell’s success can be measured through their need of facility expansion. Currently, there are 49 operating branches. A vital branch to this company is located in Harlingen, Texas. It will be the primary focus of our study. The Harlingen Branch is located at 300 Hanmore Industrial Parkway and Expressway 83. It serves as the main distributor of Blue Bell ice cream throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The branch is situated in a high traffic area. The territory where the branch is located is no more than one third of an acre in size. The region surrounding the branch is completely occupied by local businesses. Lack of land size has created a parking issue. It is unable to house its seven delivery trucks. They have remedied this situation by renting a parking facility in Pharr, Texas.…

Summary statement of the problem: Church & Dwight, more commonly known by its brand name “Arm & Hammer,” has held a commanding lead in the sodium bicarbonate product market for over 160 years with virtually 99 percent of all consumer products in households within the United States. However, in order to promote growth and diversity while maintaining a steady profitability rate of three - five percent per year, the company has expanded uses of sodium bicarbonate products so that it is no longer the only focus. The acquisition of a diverse group of consumer products in international markets has been viewed as a viable option to sustain the profitability margins well into the 21st century (Wheelen & Hunger).…

A.1. steak sauce is the leader in the steak sauce industry and is also one of Kraft Foods premiere brand offerings. Developed in 1830, the product has a long history and extremely high brand awareness with a dollar share of more than 50%. Kraft Foods has focused both time and resources on the A.1. line, spending $10 million on advertising and $5 million on consumer promotion. This steak sauce giant has had little competition, substantial sales, and excellent profit margins until now. Lawry’s, a company who has a strong position in the market of seasonings and marinades, has decided to launch a new steak sauce which has similar characteristics to A.1 in taste but is lower in price. The company has planned to put a heavy amount of marketing behind its new steak sauce by hosting a live interactive cooking show that will be reaching 17 popular fairs and festivals across the nation featuring the Lawry’s marinades and spice blend and the NEW Lawry’s steak sauce. Lawry’s is also spending millions in advertising concentrated in the months of May, June, and July, the prime grilling season. This creates a problem for A.1 because the holiday weekends of Memorial Day and Fourth of July earns 10% of annual revenue. The launch of Lawry’s steak sauce came at a peak time for A.1. Sales and the company cannot afford the lose profits for the sales of the competition during the holiday weekend. The question that A.1. faces is how should the company react to the launch of Lawry’s steak…

Society has evolved over hundreds of years to be where it is now. Throughout that time, people have created thoughts and opinions about many topics such as how one should live, the way people should act, and how to treat others. Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird is set during the Great Depression in the 1930s. During this time, whites were superior to blacks. Lee uses the case against Tom Robinson to depict the impact slavery has had on racial views towards blacks. Tradition, being the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, is an example of how previous ways of life effect the present. Through the experiences of the Finch family during the time of the Tom Robinson case, it is evident that tradition affects the lives of individuals in a negative way because it shapes the way a society thinks, leaving long lasting views of racism, sexism, and classism.…

Food labels were standardized in 1994 directed by the Food and Drug Administration and the Food Safety and Inspection Services “Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act establishes specific labeling requirements, provides a regulatory framework, and authorizes FDA to promulgate good manufacturing practice regulations for dietary supplements. This act defines "dietary supplements" and "dietary ingredients" and classifies them as food. The act also establishes a commission to recommend how to regulate claims (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2005). Having a uniformed label is much easier for the customer to read what is considered a nutritional value of the product. The label provides a range of quick informed choices to the consumer prior to purchasing the item of what they constitute a healthy choice or toward avoidance of specific ingredients harmful to those having special diets.…

Being an insulin dependent diabetic with Celiacs Disease has played the main role in dictating my eating patterns for the last six years. I walk a fine line of balancing blood glucose levels with diet and exercise. Many of the foods I eat are simply because I have to follow a gluten free diet to manage my Celiacs Disease. With all of the emerging publicity of gluten free diets people assume that eating gluten free is a healthy, weight friendly, approach to eating. I find that a naturally occurring gluten free diet lives up to many of those expectations, however when certain foods are replaced with a formulated gluten free version it then becomes a different story. When gluten free adaptations of grains in breads, pastas, cereals, etc. are added into my diet I find myself eating a much higher amount of carbohydrates and calories from starch. Many of the gluten free versions of whole grains are very dense in carbohydrates. The reason behind the heightened calories and carbohydrates is because it usually takes multiple types of gluten free flours mixed together to substitute for one non gluten free all purpose flour. I anticipate my carbohydrate intake will be on the elevated side in the initial three day data, but I am consciously mindful to try to avoid too many gluten free replacements and instead opt for foods that are naturally gluten free. Other influences on my food choices would include my on the go lifestyle and my Diabetes. I have been a type one insulin dependent diabetic for twenty seven years. Over the last three decades the guidelines for a diabetics diet and target blood glucose range have changed drastically. Target blood glucose levels for “good” blood sugar control was 180 when I was first diagnosed. At the age of 12 I remember 150 being the upper limit. Now, at the age of 29, 120 is considered the highest “good” limit. These numbers…

Learning to accept yourself is more important than making people accept you. In “Real Food,” the author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, writes about a little girl who would never eat her family's food, garri. Her family often mocks her because she's unlike them. The characters main problem in the story is her mother. In addition, the mother always tells her to eat the garri or hunger will be the death of her. The little girl doesn’t listen and continues to not eat the garri. Later, she explains that garri always scratches her throat. Her mother may be her main problem, but her brothers contribute to this too. They rollick around and ask the little girl, in a joking manner, if a certain food scratches her throat. Throughout the story, this nine-year-old girl learns to accept herself and her culture in a series of events.…
